Another tire question

Different tires' beads spread onto the wheel a little differently - wheel widths can also vary - air pressure has an affect. All these things can affect the actual aspect ratio and subsequent dims.
Calculated tire measurements are not completely accurate but close enough for our purposes.
Oooh I dunno - Measure a Metzler fitted to a rim. my 150/80R17 ACTUALLY measured 143 across fitted and the height calculated out at 90%.

That's a 2.6% difference on the same tyre simply because it does not fit the rim PERFECTLY. Actually the sidewall height was a wee bit taller But the Tacoma calculator takes 90% as the highest aspect value

I found a table once on Metzlers US site that showed the 150/80 was spec'd for rims of 3.5- to 4.0 - ideal being 3.75.
The Cobra was 150 wide and 80% high fitted - it is made for a 3.5" rim. The Azaro is made for a 3.5"rim. it's 140wide and 80% high.

I don't have a vernier calliper wide enough to do the rear.

My understanding is the first number is the tire section width (sidewall to sidewall).
The section width (sidewall to sidewall) is less than the overall width.
The second number is the section height percentage of the section width.
So the section width is not the measured max width of the tire.

Every single other M/C tyre I've measured is spot on the mfr's declared width fitted on the correct rim. Avon publish the exact sizes fitted on RECOMMENDED rim. Dunlop publish, Bridgestone publish - Metzler seem not to.

The 150 Metz on the triumph rim is what is called a PINCH FIT. I.e on a rim that really is a bit narrow - OK but not ideal. The inverse will occur if you put a tyre on a rim too big for it - It'll flatten out and (on paper) lose sidewall % - though on a M/C which often an almost v shaped tyre section - it could also effectively raise height. . I'll put money on some tyres actually having LESS tread width than section width. Avon SM's for example. And one or two CT's.

Oh and managed to find this.

Speed ratings are based on laboratory tests where the tire is pressed against a large diameter metal drum to reflect its appropriate load, and run at ever increasing speeds (in 6.2 mph steps in 10 minute increments) until the tire's required speed has been met.

Manufacturers can't possibly test every combination of tires in a given market, especially some of the combinations we come up with, dark side ,rear on front etc etc, so they err on the side of caution . Metz is not going to recomend an Avon and vice versa, even if they have found it to be better, they want you to buy their tires. So just because they don't approve a specific combo doesn't mean anything, dangerous or otherwise. It's all marketing b/s

I run Bridgestone on the back with the 240/55/16. The 55 gets the speedo accurate reading. I found it really difficult to find pairs for the classic on a tire that lasts reasonable miles. I am trying a Shenko on the front. We just 2k run on the Oregon coast and it ran just fine. I also run with tire beads instead of mounted weights. I found a source for the Bridgestones for a hundred bucks at an ATV shop in Utah with free 2 day delivery.
