I expected flak from posting my personal preference to not wear a helmet, I have to wear a hardhat at work and I swear I hit the top of my head on everything!!!! go home with a sore neck most nights. for more than 20 years before insurance made us wear the stupid things ( stupid because there's no overhead hazard in my work )I never walked into stuff. laugh but I need my peripheral vision. I agree the equipment is for the s4it we don't see comin'

Like Canberra said " wear what you want , no skin off anyone else's anything".. but having ended up underneath my Rocket after it bounced off an Armco railing I now wear all the gear all the time .. a very painful lesson was learnt.

I for one will not take the chance. I have ALOT of skin to damage.
The more skin you have the more painful it can be!!!!!!
That's my theory anyway

Now come on Scott you now darn well you just called me out whats up with that I know darn well I' not a poser I still think the helmet thing depends where you live states that do not have the laws to wear it it's does not seam to be done as much but you get by state that do and you see it more or if the state next to it does you see it more when I was young and dumb I did not mind the wind beating me in the face with all the bugs and on log trips did not mind having tunes but now why not if your on a 500 or more mile ride you should ride it nice and easy and enjoy it or not that is why they have a touring and a roadster i'd guess

Now everyone knows that is not true I would never let my bike go 100miles without washing or polishing it.
That said I do wear a good full face helmet but at times I do lack on the other gear

I enjoy my windshield and occasionally my music while riding.
You enjoy wearing a skirt.

As most of you know I cannot ride my bike with my kilt on due to the fact that my **** slows me down with it dragging on the ground.

I knew that would get you to talk you got to keep them clean haha and I like my tassels on my bike but love them on the nipples better when looking at them

Wouldn't you just skip motorcycling entirely if you take your life so seriously? C'mon, we all know that we've increased risk by getting on two wheels and facing the idiots in traffic. If safety was my main concern, a very large SUV would be more appropriate.
Look, I'm not discounting the value of gear. At some point, though, don't you have to make some compromises so that you still enjoy riding?

In my nearly 50 years of riding motorcycles I have come to learn a thing or two, some providing much harder lessons than others:

Accidents are unpredictable.

You can break or severely injure any part of your body and still maintain quality of life with a functional brain. The converse is absolutely impossible.

Generally speaking the style helmet a motorcyclist chooses to wear is directly proportional to that which they possess worthy of protection.

Make your own choices, but be certain that you fully understand and accept the consequences which may follow them! BTW, they don't just affect you, but your friends and family, too!

That's a great of illogical rationalization, SDCC.

I do wear a helmet... although I'm sure most would agree there's not much to protect there.

Still don't see how my argument is illogical... if you wanted to be truly safe, and protect that noodle of yours, you wouldn't ride. An earlier post mentioned bubble-wrap, and that's exactly how we all could live - wrapped in some sort of insulation and staying in our comfy little houses for the rest of our lives.

Everyone on this forum has made the decision to take some risks... leave the womb, and live a little. So... now that we've established that we are taking some unnecessary risks, it's just a matter of determining what "risk/reward" compromises we will make in life.

All argument aside: How do I get over the discomfort and claustrophobia I feel every time I put on a full face helmet? I could be swayed to take more precautions, but I ride because I enjoy it... if I stop enjoying it then... (I don't even want to say it).

I had to take a detour sunday while riding because the initial road was closed. That was ok but I got behind about 15 Harley riders in which they was in a club. They all had on vests with their club name at the top on the back of the vests a cross in the middle and "Jesus Saves" at the bottom. After a little while riding behind them on curvy mountain roads I noticed how dangerous they was riding together. I have never seen anything like it. They was in a straight line most of the time and they was following each other extremely to close. I am serious when I say close because I thought there front tires was going to touch the back of the lead rider in front of them. I fell back after I saw this. Then noticed they had this long "rope" hanging from their handle bars on the left side. I mean the rope was almost touching the ground. I was like "WTF is that for?" They had jeans and boots but no helmets. If these people owned Hondas I believe they would all drive the same and have ropes hanging from their handle bars. What I'm saying is posers don't know how to dress properly and ride properly. I ride with Triumph riders and have never seen us ride as close and dangerous as these folks was doing. One guy must have broke down because he came to a stop on the right side of the road. One by one everyone wanted to turn around and go check on there buddy. I have never seen such unorganized behavior as that. After they all finally decided to pull over I dropped mine down a gear and blasted on by shaking my head.

Now on the proper attire. My motto is "Dress for the slide not the ride!" If you ever had your foot crushed by a falling motorcycle which would be better to have on your foot? A motorcycle boot or sneaker? How about a pair of gloves where the ring finger is sewn together to the pinky with a piece of leather. This keeps your pinky from rolling back during impact. Grab your pinky and pull it back until it's uncomfortable then imagine if your pinky goes back even further how would that feel?

I wear race boots, pants with armor, leather jacket with armor, race gloves, and full face race helmet. Maybe I'm paranoid but I like to keep my skin where it is now and my bones in one piece. I realize that all this isn't going to help all the time but I've got a better chance of not getting hurt as bad. I wrecked my sportbike I once had and if I didn't have all the armor on I would have gotten hurt. My helmet smacked the ground as I went down over the handle bars. I landed on my back in which the jacket I had on had back protection. So it really doesn't hurt to go overboard on riding gear.

We just had a bike event in our town. I saw some bikes there with a long leather rope hanging from the handlebars. My friend from California knew what they were. They have a quick disconnect on the handlebar end. The rope has a weight on the end. The theory is if a cager does something stupid you whip off your leather rope and smack their windshield with the weighted end. I'm thinking smacking the wrong guys windshield could be a very costly mistake.
