For shear functionality, I use the Nelson Rigg soft bags for travel with EZ brackets. I can take them right into the hotel room with me and the entire side (top when you lay them down) opens up. No wasted space. Entire set up was $250.00. They come with rain covers which do keep them dry.
I'm going to try a set of National Cycle Cruiseliner bags that I got cheap on Ebay. They don't sell mounts for the R3 so I'll have to make the ones that come with it fit. They are made to quick release but mine will be permanent, I found some flush mount taillights to use as turn signals that should match the taillight pretty well. I think the shape of them will complement the rear of the bike nicely. The Corbins are awesome but I can't see any reason why they are almost $2000 for some nicely shaped fiberglass and you can't even use your factory backrest. If the bike gets knocked over they are the first thing to get ruined I'd rather be out a couple of hundred than a couple of grand. That's my theory anyway but I'm a cheapskate. I'll post some pics when I get it together.
You can use your factory back rest with the Corbins just fine. However, I would not pay the price they are asking for them now either. I got mine for substantially less when they first started making them, I can't believe what they are asking now..
I did not know that, I remember reading a reveiw from years ago on the Valkyrie beetle bags (I think they were called grifters back then) that you couldn't use your factory backrest with them because they were so close to the fender. I thought all Corbin bags were like that, my mistake.
I sent an email to Tsukayu and they said that their hard saddle bags won't fit on the Rocket, but their trunks will...just need to remove the backrest and luggage rack. The trunks also come with built in backrest and lock.
Hope this is helpful information. If anyone has indeed put their saddlebags on, it would be great to know and possibly see a picture.
