Actually, gasoline is the by-product. Diesel has more thermal energy per unit volume than gasoline. In the last part of the ninteenth century the oil producers used to burn the gasoline as a waste product coming from the cracking towers. Then some genius figured a way of using it in engines and they began selling it for pennies a gallon. Heating oil was the big ticket item in those days.
