When I bought my '05 a couple of weeks ago, I was impressed by so many things about the beast except for - the little toy buzzer that jokingly passes for a horn.

Now, I've put the buzzer-type horns on a couple of dirt bikes that I had made street legal and plated, but that was just to get the inspection certificate, not to think that I could actually warn motorists (with their windows up and the stereo playing) to please not pull out in front of me and my 800+ pound behemoth rolling in their direction.

I had given some thought to the Nautilus/Bad Boy horns that many here use. I have the Bad Boy on my FZ1 and it's piercing blare has saved me from day-dreaming lane changers a few times. I've also used the Nautilus on other bikes in the past as well with good results.

But, for the R3 I really wanted something that was just as loud, but had a deeper, more manly tone consistent with the character of the R3 (or maybe a '73 Sedan DeVille). So, I found the chrome version of what I had used mounted on the Thunderbike crashbars of my '01 Tiger 955i - a pair (one low, one high) of Stebel Magnums.

I ordered them from Todd at HornsPlus Automotive: Air horns for sport cars, motorcycles, boats, and emergency vehicles The pair ran me a mere $18.95 (+ $10 shipping). He shipped them quickly and was very responsive to a question I had. I'd certainly order from him again.

New horns mounting for now is on the bottom of the raditor shroud. They're wired through a typical Bosch 12v relay to a fused direct connection to the battery. The stock buzzer remains, so I went ahead and re-wired it back in too.

When I hit the button now, instead of the anemic "meep" from the stock horn, I get a deep, loud and attention-grabbing "BWAAAAAAAH!" Love it.

Thanks for sharing Judge!!:)
I went ahead and ordered the same set up.
What is the number of the relay you used?
I'm not very smart with that stuff, a picture would work too:D
Thanks.
Lupe.

Any 12v 30 or 40 amp 4/5 pole automotive relay will work. It's basically just an electrically activated switch that allows you to control a higher amperage circuit with a lower amperage switch (and wiring) like the stock horn button. On the 5 terminal, you just don't use the center one (87a) for thsi sort of application. Here's an example -Amazon.com: Absolute RLS125 12-VCD Automotive Relay SPDT 30/40A: Automotive You can get them at any auto parts establishment.

Here's some relay basics that might help - temp14 and RELAY BASICS.

The stock horn wires go to 85 and 86. The fused wire (14 guage or larger) from the + batter terminal goes to 30/51. The positive wire out to the horns hooks into 87. You have to run wires from the negative posts of the horns to a good ground into the chassis of the bike. Double check those connections before you hit the horn button.

This is what I have - cost me $15.50 + $10 about 20 mths ago. Put is under my bear claw where the overflow bottle used to be. Not as loud as a Nautilus but pretty bloody good anyway.

Carefull judge if them there horns vibrate to much they will crack the welded bosses to the radiator and your bike will be piddling antifreeze everwhere. I would find a more solid location for them.

Good point. Maybe P clamps on the dressers bars would be a more solid mount point.

Taking Warp 9.9's sage advice to heart, I ordered a couple 1.25" chrome clamps to mount these horns to the dresser bars.

I got my horns today, i tried to find a place to install them other than the radiator and couldnt find any place at all!
I checked the radiator holes and seem pretty solid, i already have the auxilary lights there and havn't had any problema at all in over a year,,,, i'm tempted,,,,,
