55 in 2011, where to go?

Pacific Coast

There are many great rides but there are few that can compare with Pacific Coast Highway starting in Los Angeles and ending below Seattle. The trip should be planned for 3-4 days and never rushed. Through Santa Barbara, Big Sur, San Francisco (over the Golden Gate) and the unbelievable northern California Coast up through Oregon and Washington. I have made that ride solo a couple of times..both are trips that still make me smile as I remember small towns and unique places, the roads, and forests...The solitude and raw power of the Pacific are amazing. I could go on and on about those trips. Add that to your list if at all possible.

I have done the left coast thing in the 70's and I consider it to be just like Myrtle Beach the one and only time I went there..............I lost nothing during the trip there fore I do not need to return. Read carefully, I stated that I do not wish to go West of the Rockies. Idaho and Montana are possibilities but I have been to Seattle numerous times and I like the town but not as a bike destination.

Just remember the farther north you go the worse the roads are......Ime sure glad we werent on the bikes when we went to upstate NY this summer......I know those pot holes would have killed one of us plus it would have swallowed the bike:D

For the remotely alternative in bent, I've always wanted to do the sorta route Robert Pirsig et al did in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, which is across the northern tiers, Michigan to the west coast, through the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho...

hi saboteur

I thought to post today's ride in the canadian rockies as it is probably the last of the season with an incredible 72 degres and blue sky. highway 40 through kananaski country longview and black diamond and back to calgary . after europe a bit of north- american .
asphalt is a nice change. till next year. I thought you might like it

The city of Calgary has always intrigued me for some reason. I'll do some research and yes I have a valid passport.

Here are some suggestions, based on rides I've done recently:

1. Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1)

2. Blue Ridge Parkway (plan on riding about 45-50 MPH the entire time. And that's a good thing.)

3. USA 4 Corners Ride. This is a gem and with 21 days to complete the actual ride (and as much time as you need to return home) it's a fantastic ride.

I would discourage the LongDistance (IBA) rides that require 1000+ miles a day. That's not a great way to see the country and much of it will be done on slab in the dark. (Full disclosure: I do the LD IBA rides.)

Please let us know what you end up doing!

motorcycle rides

The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton Nova Scotia is considered to be one of the most scenic motorcycle rides in North America.
Did this a couple years ago and it was awesome.
There are spots where 1000 foot cliffs plunged straight down to the ocean.
Its a seafood lovers delight.
I have a route map that goes from Ontario, thru Quebec and around Gaspe Peninsula and N.S. and back thru Maine and New Hampshire.
If anyone wants a map of this route just pm me your email addy and I will send it to you.
Its a H.D ride planner map so its easy to download into your GPS
