2006 Skipping out of Second Gear

Should throw in a cam and pistons while it is in pieces, I did and love it.

Great follow up write-up! Same issues on my 07 (been skipping second to keep riding). Trans comes of this fall for a re-build. Hoping the parts I need are just the $209 upgrade kit?
Glad yours is gonna be tip-top soon!!

Another thing to note the Main or "upper" gear set has a brake on the main input gear. This is designed to "slow down" the shaft and get a bit of a synchronizing effect between the stationary (upper) and the shifted (lower) gear sets.. That brake affair is WAY WAY to tight in my bike as in 6 of the 7 this guy has been into. He showed me a correctly adjusted similar brake on three bikes. One triumph one Kaw and one Suzuki.. These brake affairs on those bikes, give a very very slight drag when spinning the shaft that free wheels through them. NOT the Rocket 3, it is hard to hold the gear and spin the shaft. He has an old shaft from a Rocket 3 with a turbo on it that a local guy races, it twice blew the snap ring off that brake affair and eventually turned the shaft blue from Heat In that spot.. This guy takes that apart machines more tolerance into the thing so it spins not free, but much closer to free..
My Mechanic equates it to the dropping into any gear, especially second.. 8 times out of 10 bang you are in, those other two you get the almost un-noticeable tick tick and your in.. That is from this drag being too tight! and each of those barely noticeable ticks is your hardened sharp Gear Dawg Edge getting dull until. Once dull enough they pop out of gear, or slam around like mine does.

So I am about a $3500 guy with all new gear sets and a new clutch, Clutch was not terrible but we were looking at it and, guess what Im not doing this twice.. Very frustrating, I have the Light Relay kit at home first thing were doing once we get her home. Timing chain and guides are tight and look perfect in every way so, you have to stop someplace. We are adjusting the valves. Should be ready to tear it up again 7-8 days from now.

Mike ask your mechanic to explain or take pictures of this braking mechanism on the input shaft. I am curious as to when it was implemented. I have a complete 2011 tranny incase my 06 screws up. I have had mine apart twice now once for the second gear update and once because I exploded the inner clutch hub and bent the tranny input shaft. Anyway like I said I have a complete tranny clutch and all with the exception of having a billet clutch basket installed in place of the OEM basket it is completly together and I cannot see this braking system. I even have the shifting drum fork dentent wheel stuff the only thing I do not have is the two engine cases. See if he will take pictures or explain more so I can locate it. Sounds like you have a decent mechainc and he might share soem valuable information for us guys who work on the engines.
Thanks
Scott

Is this the shaft brake you are referring to? this one is very tight, shaft is very firm to turn in sprocket

If memory serves me right that fourth and fifth gear the two sets of dogs mesh for the drive. the one Peter is pointing at is on a bushing.

Everyone,
New to your Forum thanks for the line. 14 months ago I bought an 06 Rocket 3. Now this bike came from a tinker'r. It had 3 sets of handlebars 3 seats, 3 windshields, all kinds of crap and 4300 miles.. He bought it new and in my view never used it.
So as I start riding this thing (were at 18,000 miles as of Saturday) it will occasionally skip going into Second gear. Your in gear, then a split second shutter then bang you are in gear again. Talked to the dealer in KC they knew literally nothing about it (scary). Baxter cycle told me they have seen it and it is a big fix. I poked around on line, adjusted the linkage a bit and have made a considerable effort to shift hard into second... For months it has been allot better..
Well the other day it started skipping around again, I was wearing weird boots and was sure that was it. Did about 600 miles this weekend, NOT the boots..IN FACT now as I down shift into second then accelerate... Same nonsense, almost every single downshift.. Now if you were lucky and your bike did this right away they even warrantied this stuff..
Lots of horror stories, I was going to call Baxter and Drop it off.. I have heard $1200-$6000 horror stories.. Any idea what I am up against.
Regardless I don't think any 3000 mile trips are smart with this getting worse.

Had update kit fitted free from JCS Perth West Oz at 50k now done 200k No worries!

I thought Triumphs "goodwill" only extended to original owners so my update kit sits... For me it's a matter of trust or more my understand of dealers model and the piling on of charges once the bikes opened up. I see it going down like this. THe update kit is a 26 hr job at $110.00 per is $2860. I say OK lets do it then they open it up and call me back there to show me a $4000. list of problems all the time the bikes market value would never cover the repair costs. So she sits, I have a 2nd bike I take out to rag on and hopefully warp will need a room addition or bigger garage or just extra cash to do the job for me.

Did you ever buy a update kit ? the price has rose to a wee bit over 1200.00 for the kits.

Yeah, I won't use the heel shifter any more after getting mine rebuilt, you can't feel it like you can a toe shifter, I bet that was part of my problem.
