a few months ago I went into my local dealership where I have had all the wok on my bike done for the last 4 years, and inquired how much the 20,000 mile service would cost, the service writer gave me a verbal cost of around $700.00

And then I was involved in an accident and my bike sat while I recuperated.

Yesterday I returned to the dealer to make an appointment, I spoke to a guy I hadn't met before about the service he looked at his computer and quoted me $1330.00  I said are you sure? he said yes, I mentioned the earlier quote to him and he said those people arent here anymore, I asked about the mechanic who normally worked on my bike, ..not here any more... I have two new mechanics... Have either of them ever worked on a Rocket I asked...No he replied, Rockets are hard to work on and your looking at two days of labor for that service...

Needless to say I'll be taking the bike somewhere else...

 did you tell hime to stick his service department where the sun don't shine ... I bloody well would have that is ludicras, what a dickhead he really knows how to lose customers, I hope you made sure every body you know in your area knows he is a rip off merchant. I even think you should mention his name here so no captains visiting your area get riped off......there I feel better now:D

you know the 20 000miles like up here called 32000kms check is also around the $1100 to $1500 mark I am surprised that you could have it all done for $700 .

but good luck in any case shopping around is the way to go .

do it your self if there are things like valve clearance (only because it probally isn't worth your expense to keep all the different shims) to be done find someone to do that but otherwise do it your self :D

I wouldn't mind doing the work myself....

Where can I find a copy of the recommended service to be done at different intervals?

Its in the manual, The real kicker is they charge you even if they do not have to lift the cams. If this is need then it is some work and I would not wnat some one learning on my bike. So Check the shims andmaybe you will be lucky. rememember to little clearance especially on the exhaust valves is not goog as they worm up from the exhaust heat and the clearnce gets smaller. which if its bad a valve might not be closing. Its even a easier job if you have the triple filters because you will not be pulling all the intake duct. If you need to make changes do not remove the tensioner until you have aquires the Triumph tool to set the timing when your going back together. Aslo you don't have to pull the front wheel, brales and fender just put a towel over the fender to protect it and be carefull when pulling the radiator. New clutch cover gasket and you might want to update the lifter piece to the new style while your in there. Especailly since it is only 30 to 40 bucks. Take a look at your clutch fibers since your in there and renew if out of tolerance. You possibly can save the cam cover gasket but IMO renew it anyway. You will need new coolant so buying some engine ice will help it runn cooler or at least slow down the fan cycles. new plugs while your at it good time for some real good plugs if your choose. Water pump Gasket also.
When you set the cam timing make darn sure you leave no slop on the throttle body side as one tooth off will reduce over all HP by 10 15 horse. take your time and it is not hard. This is also a good time to check the depth of drop on the tensioner before loosening it to make sure you do not need to add the spacer to bring the spring tension back up to new standards.

Also you should remove the tank, I am not sure if that is in the instructions but it is so easy(on the standard and classic I can not speek for the tourings like yours). but if it is fairly easy you should do it so it is easier to see what your doing. On mine I unplug the fuel pump wireing and then remove the fuel line Place a good size towel on top of the engien as some fuel will come out the lin but not much and this will soak it up. it will not leak out the fitting on the tank it has something like a one way or check valve on it. plce tank out of the way (again this is so it does not get damaged). You can leave the throttle bodies on and in place. Just be double sure when you go back together you get the gasket to line up properly so it does not squeeze out. Otherwise you will shizt your pants thinking you popped a head gasket when it is just a leaky gasket.

Use all proper torque specifications when doing this for two reasons. One being you know its right and the other is so you do not over torque and break anything. To often I read about things snapping like oil plugs in the sump rear end and such which could be avoided by using speciffc torque settings. I di re-use the washer/gasket on the fuel pump even though people and the book says it won't seal I have had mine off over 20 times and never changed it yet. Same with the oil plug gaskets. Your call if the dealer has them readily available you can renew them.

Oh and I submit to you that if it takes two or even one mechanic two days to do this the I have three statements to make.

#1 they are Triumph mechanics and I am a Neurosurgeon:D

#2 if they hired mechanics that only have one more operating brain cell then a dead cow:D

#3 wait for the new Triumph dealer to take over because they sure as hell will not be in business long :D

Jim, i have the service manual, Bill (rocket3pilot} gave it to me, he can probably make you one for a small fee:D
