1st Service - 500 miles

I checked but did not see any threads.

This item is listed on the 500 mile check - Autoscan - carry out a full Autoscan using the Triumph Diagnostic tool.

Sounds like it is using something similar to a OBD scanner for a car.

Is this worth doing?

Is this an actual proprietary Triumph tool or just a standard scanning tool that works across other makes?

The remainder of the other items on the list seem to be "Check for ..." items. I figure if I do not see any leaks for any of these items I am good to go.

Go to the dealer.

The first service is when they validate your warranty. Gamble of you want, but in 15 months if you have tranny/motor/frame issues don't be surprised when Triumph refuses to honor your warranty because it never got to do the first check on the bike.

This comes up frequently, after first service have at it on your own maintenance.

To answer your question, the scan is done using the dealer tool, a suite of software, not just a basic obd2 scan.

Never heard of being required to Validate a warranty before. I thought the warranty came with the bike. The feds have some pretty no nonsense laws when it comes to warranty's. Manufactures and dealerships can say all kinds of neat things but the law is the law. I checked my Warranty and it says nothing about being validated at first service. Did I miss something somewhere?

You did not miss anything you can do or some else can do your service work on the bike it does not have to be the dealer but keep good records of all work that was done and that includes reciepts,

I did the dealership way for all my servicing especially the first one. I am not as good as many at doing computer stuff on a bike or anything beyond an oil change. But I do want to keep my dealer going so I pay the extra coin to help the cause. It has paid out a couple of times when I needed a loaner bike...

I was a bit curious because in 05 I bought a brand new American Bonneville which I never took in for service. Did the work myself and kept good records. At 25,000 miles the ECU went south and I had no problems getting it replaced under warranty.

This very thread has taken place numerous times on this site before.

If you look at the list of checks for first service you will see a ton of things are checked and some things adjusted at first service, when the bikes are assembled they are "ballparked" to be close enough so the engine can be broken in, but are actually precisely adjusted at first service.

Your bike, your dime, but does it really make sense to spend 14-18 K on a bike and skimp on the first service because it costs a few hundred dollars?

If I had a shop around here that was trust worthy I would have seriously taken the bike in at the 500 mile service. So I did the checks and adjustments myself. It is not so much the cost of having it done but knowing that it was really done and not pencil whipped. You would be amazed at how many dealerships just change the oil and say they checked everything else on the bike. Not just talking about Truimph dealerships. It is kind of like this, would you take your bike back to a shop for the 20,000 mile tune up after they completely screwed up on a rear tire replacement? A five year old with a toy tool kit from Wall mart would have done a better job. No thank you, Had the same problem with the Harley and their dealerships. So we slowly and painfully learned how to work on the bike. Now after five years of reading and working on the Harley I have reached a very competent level when it comes to mechanical choirs. Doing the same with the Rocket. Resources for the Rocket are more limited then the Harley but this site has helped out a lot. Still have a lot to learn. In time we will get there.

If you do your own service initial the relevant box in your owner's manual. Might be handy should warranty coverage be needed.
