Well I'm finally pulling the trigger and shipping Betty to Carpenter Racing for his 240 hp package. (It almost sounds dirty that I'll let a man put a big package in my Betty ). The shipper should pick her up between Mon-Wed. But I've decided to fly up and ride her back to south Louisiana. Probably August 17th.

Looking at Google maps there are 2 reasonable routes, which involve lots of interstate .
I'm planning on taking 3 or 4 days (possibly 5) to ride home. I was wondering what might be some good side roads to hit along the way, places to eat, cheap hotels.

@ Steel..I'd be curious to know what shipper you're using and you're opinion on the service after the fact.

NJ to LA. There are so many places to see when you get to the North East.
Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC public buildings, White House, Capitol Bldg, Smithsonian at the Mall, Washington Mnmt, The Wall, Arlington Nat Cem., and many other monuments and memorials. National Air and space mus. at Dulles airport is an excellent visit.

Take a day for this side trip in route. Take I66 west out of Washington DC to Front Royal, VA. Visit Skyline Caverns then ride the Skyline Drive south to I64. Another side trip when you get to I64 is in Charlottesville, VA. Visit Thomas Jefferson's home Monticello. Then take I64 west to I81 south. It is a beautiful ride through the Shenandoah Valley. I81 S to I40 W to Knoxville, TN.

The western route would be a far nicer ride. You would be higher up in altitude, cooler, less humid and even the slab is a pretty decent ride. I85 sux major &%% around Durham and Charlotte NC. Around Atlanta....... just shoot yerself first.

Given the flexibility of your schedule, you would be remiss if you didn't take the opportunity to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway from I64 outside Charlottesville, VA down to Cherokee, NC. It's 468 miles of beautiful riding. It will take 2 days to do properly. At the south end you can stay in Maggie Valle at the A Holiday Motel which routinely hosts the RAA events (including this October).
