There were some issues with the early models but installing headlight relays as suggested is perhaps the wisest and most important preventive measure you could take.
All but the latest few years were restricted in the first three gears. Easy to 'fix' and well worth the trouble. Options include fitting a GIPro + ATRE (google it or search this site if unsure) or using a tuning tool such as Tune ECU.
You might also want to consider changing the intake as removal and reinstallation of the stock intake plenum and plumbing is a real pain and also stops easy access to the top of the engine for simple tasks such as spark plug removal. Triple K&Ns or a Ramair are good options but there are some (perceived) downsides. Search this site for more info.
Hello all, I joined a few weeks ago but never posted anything to introduce myself. I'm from Decatur Illinois (hence the smell) and came into possession of a very low mileage (3400) 2005 Rocket III late last year. Anyone have any tips for me for an early model?
Welcome from Iowa. I have had my 2005 for 4 years now, almost trouble free. Headlight bypass, switch relocation and solder replacement, normal for the year. Good solid and running bike, you will enjoy it.
I've had my share of breakdowns while on different trips. On many different vehicles. If the machine is running good and fine don't worry about "what ifs" , if it aint broke don't fix it. Do the proper maintenance and enjoy the ride. [wait....... What was that? Do you hear that strange noise?]
