Which Oil on First Service?

Hi Chaps

Booked in for my first service on Friday. Whilst I am going to put synthetic oil in for the longer term, I am a bit wary of putting the stuff in after the engine has only been run for 600 miles or so, as it is so slippery that it does not allow the bed in process to complete. Hence, I am considering running the thing with semi synth until it has done about 6000 miles. What do you reckon?

Go with the Triumph recommended full synthetic.

If, in the unlikely event that something should go wrong, you will be following the manufacturer's recommendations and they would not have cause to deny you warrenty repair.

Triumph has some pretty good engineers working for them so if they say full syn, then you ought to go with full syn.

...or you could just put on another couple hundred miles, and then bring it in for service. Give a little more time for parts to wear in. I did my first service at a little over 800 miles on the odometer.

Typically the oil doesn't prevent proper break-in since the oil it has in the first 500 miles is for that purpose. The full synthetic is recommended because of its polymer content, which the transmission requires for adequate lubrication. Most of the metal wear in the first 500 miles is in the tranny, not the motor (remember it's only 8.5 to 1 compression). The motor is usually bedded at the factory, but the transmission needs break-in (which is why it shifts easier and more quietly over time). Going with half-synthetic will not harm the motor, but due to polymer break-down under the shear stress in the transmission, its lubricity will decline more rapidly than full synthetic, therefore requiring an earlier change than the recommended 6000 miles with full synthetic.

Course it's your bike, if you want to risk the trans giving you nightmares that's within your right. 2 pennies now consumed.

Good answers guys..... I had already decided to run it until 650 miles or so, but had not considered the synthetic/transmission issues...

Another couple of days before I have to make up my mind....

When I put my second set of pistons in mine I ran standard motorcyle oil in it the first 300 miles. I dropped it at 100 and then at 300 used various rpm ranges to breal her in so the rings did not glaze over after that full syn. 15 50 Mobile RT you could actually see the ring wear in the first two changes. which I was told if I did not see dirty oil I was not breaking her in right. Things work out well and this winter when I put the third set of pistons (this time forged 9:1 J&E supercharger/turbo pistons) along with the Carrillo rods in it I plan to do it again. Unless Carpenter racing difines something different for the head and Cams. Then I will go for the happy medium.
