What shocks are these?
Progressive 440. I have a set on my R3. Set at minimal preload works best for me. 07 Classic solo rider, 220 lbs. Nice set, dirt cheap.
Righty tighty, increase preload, lefty loosy, decrease preload.

Looks like a broke shock . . . zat a weld there below the top mount bolt?
 
Doubtful tis a Progressive shockie.

Calling that a weld is a stretch of the imagination. (Yuk) Either way looks like someone attempted a repair job. Shocks from the manufacturer have no bare burn spots.
