Went and looked at a very nice low mileage '05 today, might get it if my bank cooperates.

Anyway, when looking under the tank on the right side I found some sort of rod that doesn't seem to do anything and is held in place with a plastic clip. Is it the tank prop rod for doing the valve adj or something?

yes you are correct, tank prop rod for what ever you might need to do in there.

I'm impressed at your level of attention to detail! When I bought my 04 I was in such a hurry to get on it and ride it away I wouldn't have noticed if it didn't have an engine! (Well, I would have noticed that eventually..) Noticing a tank prop is truly impressive!
