Valve adjustment needed??

I have done valve adjustments on my cars ( honda 4 cylinders) and my inboard boat engine.
Is the valve adjustment just as easy to do on a R3 ?
I would prefer to do it myself if I can.
There's nothing difficult about adjusting the valves other than they are shims, not screws. I don't know about you, but I don't keep an assortment of thicknesses handy. Checking them is no problem, it's if you have to change shims that it becomes a hassle.
I hate shims, always thought that if the maker was going to have something that large in there anyway, why not just use hydraulic lifters. But I suppose there is some underlying space, performance or cost issue there somewhere.

shims

Thanks for all your help Hellfire, and putting up with my constant questions !
Are the shims something you can get at Autozone or Napa?
Or are they Triumph specific shims?
Do the dealers reuse the valve cover gasket or do they put on a new one?
I know with my car it was recommended I put a new one on and I did.

Couldn't tell you if the shims are available anywhere else, maybe someone will come along here and let us know.
Some dealers won't do the job without a gasket and some don't use one because they just didn't have it in stock. It's the ones that don't have it and don't bother to tell you that they didn't replace it that I wouldn't trust any longer. I got bit in the ass by the selling dealer that turned out to just have a very lazy service dept, it split almost a year to the day that they reused it. It's up to you, but the $35 in parts is cheaper than my (or the dealers) labor.

My dealer called me last night and said triumph recomends valve checks at 20,000, it will cost $230, i think im gonna have them do it, don't wanna have any problems in the spring on my way to NC:)

$230 Sounds pretty good, complete service at 20K was around $550. Shims are Triumph specific for about $7.50 each. Did mine myself, changed 2 of them at 20K. I believe someone here crossed ref them to another brand a little cheaper. I look for winter projects to do this kind of stuff.

I did my own at 20,000. I changed 8 of them but I wanted to shim mine to the loose side of the tolerance because like was mentioned earlier, they lose clearance as they wear. I wouldn't call it an easy job. I also found once you have calculated the sizes you need, take your micrometers to the dealer with you. It's the only sure way to get the right sizes.

Does anyone knows exactly what the 20,000 mile service includes?
i might just do it while the bike is at the shop:)
