I can see in your video that first gear dogs only seem to be engaging about halfway. Maybe this is why it jumps out of first??

Besides what Nev pointed out in the video. I also noticed the damage on the helical gear. Any swells in the teeth will tighten up rotation as the backlash clearance will not be there. You any good with a file and stone? You will need to dress the damaged teeth up a bit.

I plan to order a new helical gear and replace the helical gear as some of gear teeth are badly chipped. Do you guys think I should replace the 1st gear dog clutch as well. Also, with the engine now split what are some of parts that are good to change other than detent spring

Nat there is no bearings, just the bushing on the detent arm and a thrust washer. The only roller bearings are on the selector drum itself. the only way to remove the gear change arm is the 8 mm bolt with it in firmly there is hardly any end play on the gear change shaft. This 8mm bolt has came loose on some rockets early years though. something about UK workers drinking warm beer and not having the loctite thread locker sealant in the right area on the bolt. Ah Liquid lunches I remember them when I used to build F-14 Super Tomcats

NAT67, There is quite a bit of play on the gear selector shaft of my engine as well.

Wrap 9.9 , is this play normal or is it excessive?
I Couldn't find any bushing or washer for the gear selector shaft online in parts diagrams, Is it just the oil seal supporting the shaft through the casing.

Ok that is the gear change actuator shaft. on the three engines I have down stairs they all have at least 1 mm end play. I am not sure if it contacts the selector shaft the forks ride on I will have to hunt around and find a feeler gauge as one of my engine is split open. ( I use it to think with) anyway I have to hit the road the honey do list is never done I check back in a hour or so with my phone.
