Towing an R3

Does the motor need to be running for the oil pump to lube the transmission and final if the R3 is towed?
Or can it be safely towed (with the front wheel off the ground) for any significant distance? I am disagreeing with an HD person on another site.

It's a dry sump system. Something has to turn the oil pump to get the oil out the tank. i'm still pretty new to the rocket said don't take my word as gospel. Just seems to make sense to me.

There should be oil down there that didn't make it up to the tank when the engine was cut off. The whole dry sump idea only works when the scavenger pumps can scoop up the oil. They don't when the engine is off. I am not sure how you tow a two wheel bike on it's wheels for any distance, but a short distance shouldn't hurt.

Well if it's in neutral, the driveshaft would not be turning the transmission - the gear box in the neutral position would not have any gears lined up to mesh with each other to cause turning of said gears or clutch plates, or engine. the cut off point to all of that is the gears are not put into play when in neutral position. Right? Not claiming to be expert - JMO

My thoughts exactly the diff would be safe but the transmission would not have sufficient oil left there and the transmission may be in neutral but the output shaft will still be spinning and it needs oil too, you would end up cooking out put shaft bearing plus others at other end in transmission, the end result could end up very $$$$$

i guess the answer is yes the motor needs to be running to lube the trans. even if the motor was running the final drive would be turning at least one shaft in the trans and might still do damage i am fairly sure it was not designed to work like that.
all things considered if i broke down a few blocks from my house i would wrap a tee shirt around my forks and wrap a tow rope around the tee shirt a couple of times and hold the rope at the throttle (so i could turn it lose if i got into trouble) and let my wife tow it home.

Pressure pump only operates when the outer clutch basket is turned by the crank shaft gear. so I would not tow her myself unless its a emergency and a very short distance. trailer her and save yourself some grief.
