The Dreaded "BearClaw".

I have a dumb question. I gave a cursery look at mine the other day. I was rolling around on my stool, tightening loose nuts, bolts, etc..., and came to the dreaded BearClaw. I didn't see how to take the thing off. Is it a pop on/pop off type deal or are there actually nuts and bolts on the underside?

There are 2 bolts and 2 rubber positioning mounts on the standard. A bit of coercing to get it back on as I recall. Only your non existent Touring shop manual knows for sure.

The R3T has a single bolt holding the bearclaw in place. Its just above your radiator overflow bottle. Remove that bolt and then pull towards the front of the bike. There are two bayonet type fittings that fit into rubber grommets. Once the bolt is removed you'll need to wiggle the bearclaw quite a bit as those two fittings are held pretty snug by the grommets.

Thanks. I was just curious because it appears it has to come off if I ever need to access the overflow resovoir.

Now that is an excellent improvement. I've not seen it yet; but I will say, getting the Standard Bearclaw off and back on does require a bit of patience.

And if you've ever dropped one of the two bolts between the oil tank and engine while trying (struggling) to get them back in, a universal brain solvent (alcohol) helps, too.
