Val, That is a bearing cage. I was looking at parts engine I have and there are tw bearings up front the balancing shaft bearing and the input shaft to the tranny on the rear there are four bearings that could give up the same cage part. The rear balancing shaft, the two on the output drive, and the one on the output of the tranny that meshs with the out put drive.

My first question would be where on the front sump did you find it ?
On the clutch side or the oil filter side ? I know it might have drifted with the oil but under the clutch there is a divit in the sump most stuff from the clutch end up down there.

Yes if you pull the engine I have Ian's tools for the engine bolts and to remove the alternator/flywheel.

Pulled clutch cover off all looks good there so next Jobi's to pull engine out I will take engine to college next week and students can work on it as project still think it is output shaft bearing college has full workshop lathe mill press etc kind of nice to play with tools unread of theory lucky next week is a craft skills test.
lemonade from lemons and all that jazz
