OK, loads of good advice received, thanks. I ended up chasing the thread like Gerald suggested, then new plug finger tight plus a 1/4 turn. Didn't want to take the risk of torquing it up too much. After waiting ages for the new HT leads to get here (anybody'd think there was a war around here or something), finally fired it up. It works! Eid Mubarak! Great joy and merriment all round! Engine up to temp, a quick test ride round the block and all is good; longer run imminent.
Quick question though, as always - while faffing around I must've dislodged the MAP sensor, leading to an odd idle and check engine light. Easily diagnosed and fixed by pushing the tube back in but while I had TuneECU connected I noticed the cylinder MAP readings at idle are 650, 620, 630. I know general guidance is to keep these within 10 hPa of each other, but is it worth correcting right now, or can I leave it for a while? I'm kinda keen to get out on the beast again, been deprived for too long.
