Spam email from Carpenters address

This thread was about the attack on our beloved Carpenter Racing.

That said, my two cents: M/S has seen market share erode, and there have been suggestions that their monolithic market model is obsolete -- and -- they have seen Google's and Facebook's success at data mining, and want in on the action.

Also, M/S takes the blame for an insecure O/S -- so Win 10 is a departure from the old way.

That is, they have declared that Win 10 is the "last" version. And they have implemented (boy are they confidant) continuous updates. We often find (usually my wife will yell from the "computer room": Paaaaauuuuul -- can you help me ?) the system will be doggy, and we've learned to check for updates, and sure enough, M/S is downloading something, so we click "Restart", and the message comes up, "Don't turn off your computer - updates in progress".

It's unclear how M/S will monetize this approach -- or if they can't beat 'em so they've joined them -- Google doesn't charge for Android, and . . .

Brave new world.

Just have to love a Rocket with manly updates of our choosing, on our schedule, and thank the Lord for Carpenter, @Neville Lush , @HansO , PowerTripp, et al, who give us the ability energize our world.

Unfortunately MS is getting too much flack for the "spying" and not enough people paying attention to what they are doing when they install 10. Every bit of the "spying" including Cortana can be turned off upon initial install.

The problem comes from people wanting everything configured and handed to them without taking any responsibility for themselves. Then they whine all over the 'net about it.

Recently, Microsoft has taken the higher road and announced they are turning those options off by default. Yes, they should have been turned off all along and the options more apparent, but the people whining about these issues are the same ones that refuse to read EULAs and ***** and moan when they realize they don't have the rights they think they should.


I would apologize for these observations, but it would be disingenuous since the only people getting upset by them are the ones I've described above.

Win10 is Ok; it isn't any more intrusive than any other mainstream operating system. While a hacker could compromise a PC and obtain an email list, it requires an insecure email service/configuration to actually impersonate the sender to use it - and a series of insecure email services to receive it.

I would suggest reading these two articles. While Linux and Mac are safer that Windows, they are not safe by any means if the user is not making sure they are safe.

Yeah - Microsoft has been through quite the crucible with malware and the like. They probably have the best security team on the planet or at least they're right up there. If you keep your Microsoft OS updated at all times you're pretty safe these days if you don't do really stupid stuff - like opening mail attachments or surfing to really unsavory web sites with an old, not-updated browser etc. No OS is safe if you don't patch and maintain it.

As for monetizing - Well, Windows 10 still costs over $100. They're just giving it away to Win 7 and 8 customers to move them all to Win 10 or as many of them as possible. Come August 1st, if you want Windows 10 you'll be paying to upgrade.
