I have an 07 classic tourer, 28000 miles and i have a vibration/howling noise on decel, anywhere under 2000 rpm, in all gears, louder in lower gears. The vibration is in the floorboards, left rear shock, (sitting on the bike). I have replaced the torsional dampner with new case, checked the u-joint, lubed the splines, checked rear wheel bearings, I even opened the bevel box and inspected the ring and pinion, thought for sure I would see some unusual wear, NOTHING ! I have put about 250 miles on since changing the torsional dampner and nothing has changed. Didn't find anything unusual when I drained the oil from the crank case. My last stitch of hope was to open the clutch and inspect it, opened it last night, I didn't open the clutch pack yet but when I opened the case everything look solid as a rock, I thought for sure something would be falling apart but NOTHING. The howling noise sounds like the gears in the differential, anywhere at 2000 rpm and lower I hear it. The tranny works real good, easy to find neutral and normal riding is all good. I'm just afraid to take the bike on an all day ride. If I cant find anything in the clutch the only thing else I can think of is to switch out the bevel box and try that.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I love the bike......but I love to ride also and tired of not being able to ride.

Howling noises are usually related to bearings in my experience, the fact you mention during decel points to overrun where the bearing load thrust reverses from east to west so to speak..

Sounds to me as if you have a transmision bearing worn or maybe ready to collapse.. could be the dreaded output bearing.. have you had a dealer diagnose to problem for you..

Take care if your riding something could lock up..

Isn't the output bearing on the torsional dampner??? or is it behind the clutch?? in front of the dampner?? i agree with you on the east west thing, something is changing. Haven't had a lot of luck with the dealer diagnosing things lately, I had it in there last summer for 3-4 weeks for a vibration in the clutch, said they couldn't find anything, even talked to Peter from Triumph, he pretty much said it's the nature of the beast, go ahead and ride it, to me that's just plain BS.

Rear tire? Pull in the clutch and hit the kill.........it will probably still be howling, that is what it sounds like to me.

Yep G/box output shaft not so much end thrust as main and counter shaft bearings but it is a known failure on earlier model as covered in great detail in early threads.

Problem with these things is the uncertainty whilst riding and the fact that the tranny and the engine share the same oil..

Its a hard one mate.. even at strip down you cant always pick it and end up replacing bearings just to be on the safe side..

You could drop the oil, check the magnetic plug and cut open the filter to check for metal in the filter screen.

Hope this helps..

Thanks, But I checked the rear tire also, when I pull in on the clutch, the noise stops like I'm taking presure off of something.

Ditto! Mine makes different sounds as the tire wears. Now is the loudest its ever been, as I also just ordered tires. Very well could be. Good tip!

Thanks Uncle Jesse, i did check for flat spots on the tire, Avon with about 2500 miles on it, it looks good

Thanks Dennsell, I just got into the service manual and looked at the out put shaft and bearings, very well could be, that would explain the east west, loaded and unloaded presure on the bearing, still up for options though, lol Maybe I could find something on the bearing replace.
