Secondary TPS issue... need some help

2005 Triumph Rocket 3, 2002 Honda Shadow Sabre
I have a 2005 R3, I am the 2nd owner. It only has around 4,000 miles on it, so aside from being frustrated, the engine light was on, I have followed this site and been able learn alot about my bike from here so I was hoping to get some feedback and maybe avoid the 90 miles to the nearest dealer. I have TuneECU and the code says Secondary TPS high voltage, short to ground. I checked the 2nd TPS, TuneECU says it should be .70 volts, it is reading 4.85. The sensor was fully counterclockwise so I tried full clockwise, this dropped it down to 4.50 volts. I think I need to look for a ground issue, but I'm not sure where to start. The bike seems to be running fine otherwise but I want to fix this and I don't know if this issue could create any other problems if ignored. Any help with this matter is greatly appreciated. there are guys that have better knowledge than me
but as an idea because of the age it might be stuck wide open. i have never had mine off but on cars they usually have a lever or a blade that opens it up but has a way the plate can return if the sensor freezes up and stays fully closed. it should be .6 volts. because it is reading 4.85 either the sensor or the 2nd throttle plate is stuck full open.
like i said someone with the tune ecu should give better details.
 
the short might be in the TPS sensor and you might have to change it I believe it will run about 120 bucks. First check the wiring from the TPS to the plug to make sure it is not scrubbed. Then check from the plug to the ECU plug to make sure its not grounded out. 5 volts is the highest it see's if it were my bike I would install a new one anyway do to the age. I would still check the harness to the ECU though.
 
I put a new sensor on it before posting, I should have mentioned that. Originally, it had 2 codes, 2nd TPS malfunction and short/bad ground. After replacing the sensor it now has the single code, high volts short/bad ground. Also the secondary throttle plates have been removed. I can check the blade that goes into the sensor and see if it is stuck. Thanks for the responses. I want to know all I can about my bike, but my technical/mechanical skill set is a weakness that I am working to strengthen. I my miss speak, or not know the proper names of some components so please bear with me as I learn. Thanks again.
 
When you installed the secondary TPS sensor did you manually open the secondary plates like your supposed to before you installed the sensor? Even without the plates you should still rotate the shaft to fully open position before installing the sensor.
 
Warp has the answer. The secondary TPS works (sort of) opposite to the Primary TPS. If you don't open the plates (or the shaft, even with the plates removed) you will get what you are getting. Take the TPS off, open the secondaries, then fit the TPS. The secondary shaft will then move to the closed position when you let it go, and you will be able to set the Secondary TPS to its correct setting.
 
DO you have a copy of the service manual? If not I will upload the page to the secondary TPS when I get home from work. its too large and the site will not let me upload the complets manual to this post.
 
I do have the manual. I have been at work but I have seen the posts and I know I did not rotate the secondary shaft to open before installing the TPS. When I get in I will check it out, but I think you guys have nailed it. I will keep you posted. Thanks guys.

Yes if you do not rotate it it will peg the Sensor out which is why you have extreme high voltage on it. the sensors on these bikes all work from 0 to 5 volts Let us know how it turns out. It does cover it in the manual the only difference is your useing different computer software. I would also read up on doing a full ISCV rest after you get her installed right. IDK can probaly discribe it on Tune ECU better then myself as I am a die hard Tune Boy user. The end results are the same when it comes to diagnostics.
