Lower Octane Fuel has a Higher Calorific value than Higher Octane. High Octane % means the fuels burns SLOWER and less completely and thus reduces combustion chamber temperatures.
Thankfully the Ethanol thing is not an issue here. (Yet?)
I had to run my E-Type on 98Octane because it detonated on 95.
Ran my Guzzi on 98 for years because it was still leaded. But since putting in lead-free valves and seats - I use 95 and it runs crisper (despite raising the compression a bit just before we did the valves)
Bog Standard R3s don't need High octane as they are designed not to need it - The twin plug heads eliminate the issue of slow flame fronts, the FI monitors and adjusts mixtures.
