I'm trying to remove the rear wheel but the spindle and nut turn as a unit. I don't have anything that fits the recessed hex opening on the other side of the spindle to hold it. Anyone else had this problem or have a recommendation?

It is, but it's about 2mm too small.

How's the healing coming along?
 Sorrt, I was just goin' from memory.

Ribs heal EXTREMELY slowly :( and the shoulder isn't much faster...so I've been measuring my progress in fractions of an inch, where each day I gain 1/8"-1/4" additional freedom of movement. Gotta' hurry it along, though 'cause my new bike will be ready before I am. 8), and riding season is slipping by. :(

Good luck on solving the spindle wrench problem. 8)

Thanks you guys. Felt a bit stupid but will head over to Napa today.

Captain Grey Wolf - feel better and hope to hear of you out riding soon.

Or a grade 8 bolt with a 19mm head and double nut it. Must be good grade hardware, but it often works in a pinch. 1/2" bolt double nutted will fit in front axle.
Ah, the (sometimes) joy of living in the boonies...

You don't need a hex wrench to work with the rear wheel spindle. You do need one for the front wheel though.

All you need for the rear is anything big enough to fit in that hex head to prevent it from spinning (a 1/2 inch hex head or large flat head screw driver works too). It's that big nut on the other side that you need a wrench for. Once you undo that nut, you just use a rubber mallet to pound out the spindle. Do the reverse to install. Make sure you note the spacer orientation so you install it the same as before. Also don't forget to clean and regrease the spindle, spacer and drive gears.
