R3 High idle after warmup, kill switch temporarily corrects

Hi All,

I have an 05 R3 with TORS, no CAT, and PCIII. Right before my 20k service, my bike was idling rough and shutting off. I took it in for service, and the problem was corrected. However, about 10 minutes after leaving, the bike started idling around 1500 rpm, and engine braking was difficult to say the least! After a near death experience on a tight curve, I flipped the kill switch.:eek: When I cranked back up, the bike was completely normal, idling around 750 rpm. :D After 10 minutes of riding, the high idle started again,:mad: but can always immediately be fixed for a few minutes by flipping kill switch. I took it back to the private Dyno tuner, and he said the throttle input on the computer stayed at 0, so he doubted TPS was an issue. I took it back to the dealer, and they installed the Triumph Tune for TORS, no CAT, to the ECU (not PCIII). This did not help. They then lubed all the throttle parts, and told me my cables were hyperextended from the RIVCO risers I installed. However, if this was the case, why does it run perfectly until warmup, and then automatically correct when I flip kill switch? I am taking it back in next week and not sure what to tell them. Any thoughts?

Have you tried a 12 minute tune?

My 05 used to do the same, however, I could reduce the idle by letting the bike idle in neutral for a few minutes. I never tried the kill switch. Finally I took the bike in for the second idle recall fix i.e. installation of the 20222 tune, and that did the trick. I have the Rivco risers too.
 
Thanks for the input. I tried the 12 minute tune yesterday, and everything was fine until 10 minutes later, and it started idling at 2,000 rpm. It goes to the dealer on Friday, and I am trying to educate myself so I will know what to tell them. They already tried two different ECU tunes, and tried to set PCIII values to zero, overriding it, but to no avail. They plan to replace the TPS sensor next, but I am wondering if that could be it since it runs fine until warmup and shows zero position on the PCIII software? Did they extend your cables after installing the Rivco Risers? Someone posted that attenuated cables can cause faulty readings, but I would think it would go haywire immediately instead of 10 minutes after warmup.

I sure hope they can fix it. This is my favorite ride of all time.
 
Mine was doing that for two weeks just prior to the ignition switch failing completely. It never did it again after the switch was replaced and the bypass relays were installed.

I installed the risers myself, and just put the cables in front of the triple tree. They are stretched a bit but it works fine.

When you start the bike, do you leave the throttle alone or apply throttle? I was told by the person that installed the 20222 tune that is very important to not have any throttle when starting otherwise the ECU gets confused.

That's the case with all fuel injected engines, don't touch the throttle when starting.
 
..sounds like the classic symptoms of a bad TPS..no matter what the readings say..make sure the dealer puts a new one in with the blue innards..don't know the part number for the newer one..
 
My 07 Had the same symptoms a couple of years ago had to put in throttle position sensor or TPS which ever way you would like to refer to it the dealership tried to remap and all types of computer cures did not work TPS fixed it
 
I was talking to a bloke on the weekend that had this problem and he replaced the tps twice and the problem came back and various other things he said it was a problem he has battled for over a year. Eventually the dealer replaced the actual throttle bodies and now his bike runs like new
 
Thanks all. I will try the new TPS sensor first, then perhaps replace throttle bodies if that fails. I am not throwing an engine code, so that may be the case. I will keep everyone posted.
