Probably thought you were the biggest mouse he had ever seen too!
But he is still just a pigeon in comparison to the ones we used to risk death from in the Northern Territory: Wedgetail Eagles, Australian Bustards and Black Kites.
Bustards are the worst as they weigh up to 28ib and are extremely slow to take off and change direction.

Wedgies are next slowest to get off the ground or usually a dead roadkill kangaroo but with a wingspan up to 2.84 m (9 ft 4 in) is quite a beast

But Black Kites (aka Fire Hawks, **** Hawks) are everywhere and swoop over the roads all the time catching insects and scaring the ****-outa-ya! The bastards pick up burning sticks from scrub fires and drop them in new areas to score the insects that get swept up in the thermals trying to escape the new fire and then return to eat all the lizards and bugs roasted on the ground.
Years ago I was driving down South from Darwin when a locust nymph (crawler) plague was occurring near the Channel Country in West Queensland and they covered the roads and plains like a moving carpet. I saw 1000's of Black kites gorging and so full they could no longer take off.
