Pure Gas vs. Gas with Ethanol

My owners manual states the R3T is safe to run up to E10 fuel. I don't like it but I don't think it will harm anything unless stored for long unused. One the other hand, stating that pure gas will destroy your engine is nonsense! Triumph designed there engines to burn pure gas but have approved them to used up to 10% ethanol.

Hi all. In Perth Australia I can't actaully recall even seeing ethanol fuel here. We have 3 types to choose from. 91, 95 and 98 ron. No ethanol and so far all the Rockets are still going strong. I run the 95 as recommended in the hand book. Fuel prices vary weekly here. For the 91 its about $1.40 at its cheapest to $1.52. The 95 fuel is 10cents a litre more and 98 is 15 cents a litre more than the 91 fuel. I find my bike to be more efficient than most other bikes I have owned even though it has the larger motor. Probably due to it been less effort on the motor to do what it needs to. Around the city I get 300 kms to a tank and open road is 360kms to a tank. If I stuck to the speed limit and rode efficiently I might get close to 400kms maybe. No other bike I have ever owned would ever get that. Cheers.

Just to add my comment, all we have in Brazil is 89 ron/mon, same as in US I think. My local Shell garage has been 2.68 Reais (1.33 dollars today) per litre. Not sure about the gallon, that's a US thing.

It's actually humbling. From an economic standpoint, I'm probably lower middle class and every single weekend (with rare exceptions) I take the misses out on the Rocket and we'll probably burn through a tank of gas and I can't imagine being able to do that paying $12 per gallon when I just paid $3.69 a couple of days ago.

At least you guys have health care...

The money for the health care has to come from somewhere.

+1

Adding ethanol to gasoline is about as brilliant as putting the Federal government in charge of health care. You think health care is expensive now, just wait until it's "free".

The Triumph dealer told me if the bike is going to sit for two or more weeks that I should put an anti-ethanol additive in it like Star*Tron.

This is supposed to fight the ill effects of the ethanol.

Supposedly the ethanol will dry out seals.

Ethanol is a moisture grabber.

God bless!!

I believe this thread started out as a mileage quest. More miles on 100% gasoline. That is accurate. Why? Ethanol has less energy per pound mass than gasoline. Think of it as filler in bologna. It doesn't necessarily make it bad, just not as good as 100% real for making power. If you think the Fed is messing with your fuel the Ethanol thing is trivial compared to the MTB fuels fiasco foisted on the public. The government monkeys with gasoline formulation in the 'pursuit' of cleaner fuels only to make engines run less efficient causing MORE pollution. It's great when our elected leaders force changes onto industries that do only ONE good thing, add taxes to our economy. The government mandates that gasoline manufacterers must add an oxidizing agent to fuels so they burn cleaner, then tax the snot out of the additive. The additive has two effects, makes money for Washington and makes engines less efficient so fuel economy is robbed. Means more fuel per mile, so MORE money for Washington.

I'm beginning to sound like a conspiracy theorist...................

Yeh! your correct.
I had an experimental aircraft (Kitfox with a Rotax motor) I was for ever replacing O rings in the fuel system with ethanol fuel.
I then used 100 low lead (aviation fuel) and the problem stopped.

A friend of mine had a small airplane, the gas tank behind the firewall with a fuel gauge on a float. The float is cork that has been coated. This is a certified aircraft.
Anyway he was using ethanol fuel for some time. One day he and his wife a flying around. The engine stopped and he had to make an emergency landing in a field. Both were Ok.
Reason for the engine out...the coating on the cork float had disintegrated because of the ethanol and blocked into the carb.
This is not the first time I have been told of airplane engine out's because of corn alcohol!

Talking about a theory.

Can you tell us, for the cost of a gallon of fuel what is the breakdown.
Tax for the government-V-Profit for the oil company?

Now I know we have our road system maintained and improved for the taxes we pay.
What do the oil companies do with the money they make, do you see any improvement to our lives from these mega companies.

I often see the cost of a gallon go up 7 to 9 cents beween 7:00 and 9:00 pm.
Is the government working that late at night to stuff us with extra gas tax or is it the oil companies.
The addition of ethanol started many years ago, which party was in power, who knows!

I personaly don't think we should use this forum as a political soapbox, I am sure there are other sites that specialize in that and our comments could mean more there and maybe make a difference.
