Poof...Big puff of smoke rises

Although this article is related to Triumph automobiles, perhaps it pertains to their motorcycles as well.

Lucas Replacement Smoke Kit

Wow I am not sure if this is more helpful than the British translation of gay terms....

Thank goodness my bike starting intermittently is not a real issue.

It's actually a benefit because the bike may not start the day my Run Out tire blows off the rear rim!

Love the Triumphs...One hour riding...Three hours wrenching.

My 2006 GTO was made by Holden and at least the Aussies did not make it as quirky as the R3. Oh thats right....It used a LS2 6.0L Corvette motor!

PS...Look at my avatar....I do not care about P 38's or Ira Bong so the only smoke I want to see is CO or WA!

Check that all your battery leads are on tight, and also the other ends of the leads.

I just went and checked the leads on my tender and noticed that the positive lead from the charger is insulated, neg is exposed.
That means the charging cable from the battery has an exposed positive lead which can be dangerous if the cap is missing. Exposed negative leads on the bike are not really serious. You need to ensure that the insulating cap is always installed on the charging lead from the battery to prevent this from happening again.

The smoke you saw was probably from the tender lead. The battery is able to pump out over 200 amps when this happens arc welding things together. If the positive post portion of the extension isn't melted, I'd look really close at the positive post on the battery to see if it wasn't damaged internally or melted. Pull all the wires off both battery posts and check for arcing, melting etc.
Make sure you don't have your face close to the battery when doing this because these batteries will explode when grounded out like this.

So, im picturing "little marco" having a meltdown at Big Donald complaing about his hand being to big to "give little marco a hand"..... then steps in Greg's "friend" & HE says: here Greg, have Snickers (brownie) - your just not yourself when your hungry............. ;) ;) ;) ;)
Hang in there like a pair o' b*lls - this too, will pass! :D

The poof probley came from the pig tail hitting the frame and then clearing itself. Check all fuses and clean the start button with some contact cleaner, stop fussing with the bike and just ride!!

Thats what I was thinking, maybe a coincidence. Mine started to do the " Not start" first press of the starter a few weeks back and after a bit of spray on the clutch lever switch I haven't had an issue since. Maybe spray that and the starter button see if it improves.
