I'm with Bruce on this one (even though I'm in UK) Over here we call it filtering & I do it in standing traffic & slow moving stuff on the Motorways. It's true that it is very tricky & a mistake is fatal, it's also true that so many car drivers don't even know that we ride bikes & share the roads with them, & yes they are tied up with maps, phones, coffee, & yes without being sexist hair & make up, but that applies to some guys out there as well. I have to say that some drivers see us coming & move over to let us through (probably bikers themselves) while others will actually close up on us to stop us passing, they can be identified by the dents in the car doors & broken mirrors, I don't know why they must have them as a badge of office.
