Oil level

Just something to think about, on some rockets the oil will drain back to the lower
engine over time. I am not sure if this would cause problems but maybe it would
increase crankcase pressure and push oil past seals or inhibit rotation of the crank.
With extra oil onboard it could complecate things in this situation, with this in mind
I think after long periods of hibernation you should drain the oil and refill the top tank,
this would ensure oil is available to pump around the engine at startup which is a good
thing.

The dry sump H-D engine and the dry sump Road Star, Roadliner and Raider engines CAN be overfilled at the oil tank. The penalty for this is that the excess oil is blown out of the vent on the valve cover. This vent is connected by hose to the air cleaner housing. The thinking being that the excess oil will eventually be atomized and burned through the engine. But, TO MUCH oil can accumulate in the air cleaner housing and leak out making a mess on the engine. All of this has little or nothing to do with the RIII engine however.


BTW, how much oil does the Rocket III take on a typical oil/filter change?

I am getting frustrated with the lack of general knowledge about the Rocket III. Not just here but also on the RAT site and the R3 Owners site. Something as elementary as the oil capacity for refill on a oil/filter change seems to be a mystery.

Recently I attempted to get information about the cable and hose lengths when adding Rivco risers and CLASSIC handlebars to a standard RIII. I know people have done it but the information on this, again, seems to be a mystery and generally unknown.

Why is it that we have people who can tear down the RIII engine and successfully reasemble it but when it comes how much oil is used for a typical oil/filter change they are baffled??

I was thinking about asking how much coolant (premixed) I should plan on buying for a coolant change but I am almost afraid of the ignorance that will be displayed. Yeah, this is a good place to come for socializing but as a source for hard information I find it sadly lacking.

I'd think (that's dangerous) with the R3's lubrication system, that so long as the oil wasn't coming out of the filler plug it should make no difference. The only thing you'd have to take into account is the thermal expansion of the oil. That is, if you filled it to the neck cold, when the oil reached operating temperature, thermal expansion would cause it to overflow.

Apparently you don't feel the need to read the owners manaul but if you did it says a dry fill is 5.9 liters, oil filter and change is 5.4 liters and oil change only is 5.1 liters. Since you probably want someone to convert liters to quarts.... 5.9 liters equals 6.2 quarts, 5.4 liters equals 5.7 quarts, and 5.1 liters equals 5.4 quarts.

Now, I have never changed oil in anything and simply added just the recommended amount of oil and called it job done. As I stated it depends on how much comes out. Did you warm the oil prior? Is the hot or cold? Are you changing the filter. Do you remove all of the sump drain plugs? I determine the amount to add by what the dip stick shows.

My rant.... what really baffles me is that you complain that people don't answer your questions but you don't take the time read the owner's manual or service manual that are both available to download for free. And secondly you don't use the search function on any of the sites. If you think you are the first person to come along and ask a given question, you probably are wrong. If you are looking for someone to be your personal assistant then you probably won't get much of a response to your questions or maybe some smartass comments that you interpret as ignorance (case in point).

If you can excuse my ignorance, the owners manual also states that the coolant capacity is 3.2 liters or 3.3814022701843003 quarts.

Sooooo....I was looking for a little more precision!! Is accuracy down to the 10 quadrillionth of a quart really good enough??
 

I did look in the owner's manual and the shop manual and did not see any info about the amount of oil to refill after a oil/filter change. Apparently I missed it.

Thank you for pointing it out. This is the first useful response I have received regarding the amount of oil recommended for a refill after draining (per the shop manual).

I have attempted to use the search function on all three sites at different times and have not been very successful in finding what I was searching for.
