My first thought was that it is in the right place for the final drive vent. My second was that it is very light for final drive lube. You'll have to check it out yourself. Remember that if it is brake fluid it will eat paint almost instantly.

Glad you both survived a nasty Incident
Silly as it sounds that is the way a lot of mechanics check oil leaks by smell or taste ,I don't mean drink the stuff but the slightest bit in your finger and touch your tongue ,like Hanso said diff oil has a unique smell as does brake fluid ,engine oil is completely different again, Pet Pi** I have heard tastes like Japanese Beer,

i tried to siphon kerosene one time and it burned like hot peppers. i can not remember what it taste like.
i seen an inspector bend over and take a big smell of a 55 gal of carb cleaner. the back bend he did was amazing!
i think i will pass on the tasting.

Idaho Rocket, that is one horrific tale. Like you, I had my first "off" after 42 years of riding and it was a doozie. I know just how you and your bride felt the first time back in the saddle post-accident, but the fact that there was a "next time" is a very good one. Kudos for your spirit and thank the Almighty for ATGATT!

Problem has been found!!!


Thanks for all of the input and everything else. The problem was a torn rear brake line at the rear brake. I was able to trace the leak, I was just looking on the wrong side of the bike for the source of fluid.


I have a new one on order now. Figured it was a good time to go up to steel line on the back.


I liked the " it could be pet pee". My bike is at the GF's place and she does have a brown Lab that spends time in the garage. It inspired me to rush home before the GF and I got 3 paper towels out for her smell test. The first one I put in the fluid, the second one was just water. But the third, I let her dog out in the back yard and placed the paper towel where he did pee. When she got home, without telling what it was, I had her smell all of them, 3 times.


When she figured it out, She was a little mad at first, but I showed her the post so she knew it was a legit scientific request on my part. But she was a little put out on 08nzRocket for even putting the idea in my head.

I Am Glad it just Brake fluid and it was sorted, make sure you neutralise (soapy water) any that mat have gotten on your painted sections of the wheel I felt it was fluid from start as I could see a track on the rim in your nice clear picture and it was sitting pooled not soaking in to the ground surface as I would suspect pet pee would have.
Take the opportunity whilst fitting the new line to completely flush the caliper and remove and clean the bleed nipple with fresh fluid as you would be surprised at how crappy the fluid can get in the caliper
