Well, I have been dating my Rocket now for about 800 miles; you see we haven't gone "all the way" yet but that changed today.

I broke her cherry :p And I think she liked it :D

Been taking it easy with her, breaking her in according to the literature, whispering "sweet nothings" into her ear as I gently got to know her; and she got to know me.

Well, today was the day. I wanted to wait until I got a thousand miles on her, but 900 just had to do.

It was a beautiful day today and I was getting a little weak in the knee's thinking about what I was going to do to her and how she would react.

I warmed her up for a couple of minutes; as I prepared my gear. I mounted her, and we sped off.

Normally I cruise with her at around 80mph indicated, and have been varying the speeds; together with short bursts of throttle just to feel her cloaked power.

Today I wanted her at top speed.

I waited until I got into a strip of the highway whereas there was very little traffic in front of me(as far as I could see) (almost a mile) and I chose the left (three lane highway) that was clear. I was running at approximately 80mph and I decided to give her the goose.

Immediately I was hitting 100 mph and climbing fast, with the wind noise (I wear ear plugs btw) becoming deafening. 100 mph, then 115; I was also trying to focus on the tach, but was mesmerized at the raw torque that she was giving me between me legs, and I was getting concerned about the new vibrations that I was sensing from the handlebars and footboards.

115mph (I think) and I still had clear road in front of me. The cars on the right zipped by so quickly; I think that they didn't fathom what actually passed them. I do get a joy out of watching them disappear in my mirrors so quickly....

115mph and I pushed it to 120, and then sped to 125mph. I held at 125mph and marveled how she started to smooth out with a very subtle vibration; I think that her harmonics smooth out at 125+ mph.

The countryside was whipping by at an incredible pace; the wind noise was deafening. However, I felt very comfortable on top of her; a slightly tucked position (full faced helmet) -and- (Roadster screen); and she was stable at this speed. Of course, a good road surface helps immensely as well....

I think I held 125mph for several seconds; but started to run out of viewable road in front of me. It was enough though; and although I hit 125mph with her; she seems to be much more capable of that. I need to wait for the right day and weather to see if I can go "just a little bit faster" with her.

I think she will dance to that. As long as I am capable, I believe she will accommodate.

Now, for all of the naysayers out there whom may be reading this; I took a very calculated risk, and it turned out well. I never ride beyond my limitations and hosting environment. Today was a most excellent day. I am very glad I bought this Triumph Rocket, and I commend the manufacturer for creating such a powerful, stable and enjoyable motorcycle.

Kindest regards,

-Will

Great story. The fun is only beginning.

Now on a Classic you are going to hit the speed limiter if you didn't already. I can't remember what it is set at for a Classic but it is lower than the 132 mph for the Standard. I may be wrong but those more knowledgeable than I will correct me.

Wish you could join us for the Rocket Launch next week.

Hi James,

I still would love to go to the Rocket launch; there's a small possibility that I may still be able to. Couple of issues that I'm working on right now. I still have your PM from the other board about it.

As far as the speed limiter on the Rocket Classic; I wonder if I was at it at 125mph? Wasn't trying to go any faster; I wonder now how much more faster I could've gone?

What happens when the speed limiter kicks in on these Rockets? Do you get a sudden deceleration or stumbling of the engine? Or does it just hold steady at top speed, no matter how much more you twist the grip?

Kindest regards,

HELLO WILLTILL.
You will definitively know when you hit the rev limiter. it will feel and sound like someone turned off the ignition switch. I have had two of these rockets, and the last one was 2007 rocket III CLASSIC TOURER. I ran her up to max speed many times, letting the speed limiter call the shots, I was at 139 to 140 most of the time. I would do this for apx 20 to 30 miles getting to where I was going, all interstate driving on a three lane highway. the only drawback to running like this is your fuel mileage. I ran out of gas one night, after one of these high speed episodes because I was watching my miles on the tank, not realizing just how much worse the efficiency is when you ride her hard., Have fun and stay safe, wear full gear protection at all times, because no one knows when some airhead might crash into you. Enjoy the rocket. Rademis

Never declare the jurisdiction.

As a former Law Enforcement Officer (Cheyenne Wyoming City Cop) I have this to say about the original story.

1. Never declare jurisdiction. You can admit to anything. They can't charge you if they don't know where you did it.

2. When (not if) you decide to open up your bike, remember, Granny has no training in gauging closing distances in her rearview mirror.

3. It is a game of cat and mouse. Just be cognizant of who the cats are and who the mice are! It's nothing personal, it's just the cops job.

My CBR600F2 is capable of taking my 6'5" 220 lb butt to about 135 MPH, I'm not even near redline or where the limiter kicks in, that's just where the hand of God stops me from accelerating any faster. It is the most risky thing (besides combat operations) I have ever done. Jumping out of an airplane with a parachute on is about 90% more safe than riding a motorcycle at over 100 MPH. I'm not finger shaking. Hell, I do it too, let's all just remember that our hobby/lifestyle/stress releiver is viewed rather dimmly by the cage driving public. We HAVE to be good will ambassidors, remember, there are more of them and THEY VOTE!!!

So true, everything you said. Thanks for your advice. Normally I don't ride quite like this but wanted to see what she'd do. Was not disappointed. ;)

What I truly appreciate is her willingness to flat out accelerate at speed, which comes in mighty handy when negotiating merging traffic on the interstates; one can easily pop themselves out of a developing tight situation with this bike.

I consider that a "safety feature" of the Rocket :D

Kindest Regards,

Much coolness Will !!!

I too have run my R3T up to the max speed a few times. I used the GPS to records the actual speed. I hit 119 mph before my fear limit made me slow down. That's fast enough for me. Lot's of open road and no traffic....... that's when I'm tempted by the speed demon.
