New front avon cobra and a shimmy

I'll never use a Avon again. Had the same issue and changed back to Metz problem solved. I was told by the dealer that changes my motorcycle tires that others have had troubles with Avon so it's just not in the Rocket world.
Thanks for your post...I was considering trying the Cobras, but will now keep w/the Metzlers. Never had any trouble with 'em.

I had the problem with an Avon Cobra on my 3T. It was the rear tire that was causing the shake. I just changed to a Michelin Commander 2 and the problem is gone. My rear Avon was completely wore out at 12000K, not the 25000 that Avon are claiming

Well you're going at it right by eliminating one variable, that by your own admission, may have been a problem prior to the tire change and the new tire just exacerbated the problem. I doubt it's the tire, although I do remember a thread about a bad batch of Avons? I have one on the front and it's about 10 times better than the Metz and smooth as silk.
My guess is that the tire installation was done incorrectly. I have seen this a couple of times where the torque sequence on the "U-bolts" clamping the axle was incorrect and it reeked havoc with the front end until they were released and re-torqued correctly. So if your new triple tree bearings don't correct the problem, get the weight off the front tire and release and re-torque. Sounds crazy but I've seen it before?

Got derailed last night so bearings not finished yet but I agree with you I don't think it's the tire, I think it the installation. Like you, I have seen it happen before

So I've never had a front end shimmy on my R3T Before and last week I had a new avon cobra installed to replace my metz and now it has a shimmy. If I let go of the handle bars at 25 to 30 mph the handle bars starts shaking. If I keep my hands on the bars the shimmy is not so bad but still there, comes and goes. Can also be felt mildly when turning left through an intersection. This all started right after the new tire was installed. In the past when this has happened on other bikes it had always been steering bearings. But this started after the new tire wad installed, felt it riding home from the shop. Gfs anyone else experienced this?
Just last week I went through this, had bought set of cobras ran for about 300 plus miles wobble didn't go away. Took it to a shop to get checked head bearing was fine and really not an issue on Touring's IM told, the mechanic showed me the tire was out of round when spinning on the balancer so they removed the Cobras and I bought Metzlers now dealing with Cobra but that's a scary issue when it wobbles like that.

Did you live with the wobble till the tire wore out before you replaced it or did you take it back to the dealer right away. As far as the balance, I would think it would be more of a wheel hop that would get worse as I went faster but the bike is smooth with no shimmy at hiway speeds.
Ridefree
I lived with it until I replaced the tire. It only had the shake from 40-50 mph and it was still manageable. My bike hasn't been to the dealership since I adopted her.

Interesting, as soon as you took the cobras off the wobble was gone?
