The newer 2009's have that latch and cable located on the bike with a key lock at the end of it. The pin is on the seat. The touring is different, but I think the classic and standard are the same. Must be another one of those little changes they made in 2008 that makes the rivco ignition relocation kit not work anymore.
The new setup keeps the beer kept in the air cleaner from being stolen. :p

The Touring doesn't have a latch. 3 bolts have to be removed, one on each side and the one on the top of the fender, and it comes right off.

Took a crack at it and I call "No Joy"

Tried everything to get the seat off but I give up! What does the Key do anyway? What does it unlock? Is there a linkage with the pull ring? I don't get it.

I would guess that an '09 Classic is the same as my '08 Standard. The key fits in the back side of the right side cover? If so then it pulls a cable attaced to a latch on the frame under the seat. The latch is center of the bike just between the rear fender and battery. The setup looks just like Molinomans seat photo except that the cable and latch are part of the bike and not the seat, the seat has a small spike that fits into the latch. If the key won't turn at all, there could be something wrong with the tumblers or more likely the cable/latch is bound up. If it were just a case of the seat not being put on straight and it was under too much pressure for the key to turn, putting weight on the seat should have allowed you to turn the key. But if that didn't work, there must be another issue and maybe the dealer should get involved just in case parts are needed to fix it.
Someone around here with an '09 Classic should be able to verify the configuration and tell us if it's laid out this way. Nearly every year has something small like this that differs from other years, so hearing from another with the same bike would be helpful.

Seat off and problem solved

Took the 09 Classic to the dealer. They opened the side panel where the key tumbler is and found that the cable between the seat locking stud and the key tumbler was binding. They removed the "tie down" position and secured it at a higher position. I can take pictures if anyone is interested. Thanks for everyone's help. :)

stuck seat

when I got my 05 in 05 I immediately wanted to get familiar the key would turn but the seat would not release I used a welding rod between the seat and the side cover and pushed the latch I guessed the cable was never really in the bracket correctly I also added some extra weight to seat so I could concentrate on the latch she didnt mind the pun it worked I hope this helps :D:D
