This is how I got both wheels off the ground on mine. As you can see I made a 2" X 12'" "plate" with a small locator piece on the front to locate against the engine case. I then made the two stands from scrap lumber to put under the plate. The plate and the stands are not connected to each other. The reason it is so long in the back is, as you have already discovered, the balance point is near the rear of the engine. You can barley see a small cross piece that is made from a 1' X 4" board that is screwed to the top of the plate at the rear of the engine and two frame tabs set on. My bike didn't have the Cat on it when I got it, so I'm not sure but if you still have that, you might have to shorten the plate. I then simply put the plate on my motorcycle jack and jacked up the plate and the bike together. I then marked the balance point with a magic marker, put the stands under each end, and removed the jack. Obviously the jack fits just between the two stands. The bike rests on the plate and is very stable to work on. Hope this helps.
