Loud Pipes Save Lives - Survey Says...

If all you are relying on is loud pipes, you're in trouble. As far as I am concerned, being visible and predictable is far more important.
Just to weigh in on the loudness factor...I have lost count as to how many times I have been surprised by a bike suddenly lane filtering (at standstill) next to me...so I would have to agree that it's a myth.
Yep... no single silver bullet. It's a mix of actions, attitude and gear...

We are counting on the others to observe us, just like we need to observe others on the road.
Most two vehicle collisions involving motorcycles occur when someone that didn't see us coming turned in front of us. The person that didn't see us is in front of us.
The shape of our exhaust system directs the noise toward the rear. To be more effective, order special pipes that point forward. That way more noise will be directed in the direction of the biggest danger.

It might be easier to install airhorns rigged up to blow continuously when you bike is running and in gear . . . . . .
