Is whistle normal at idle?

Based on what others have said, you may be describing the typical noise that the engine makes at idle. It is a kindof industrial whiistle, whirring noise. I don't notice it anymore.

It can also be attributed to the cam chain gear. When I'm rolling into the parking lot I have had people coment they can hear the whine at a distance. I don't notice it any more (or my hearing is that bad).

I'd also put my money on the straight cut gear whine. I had a '96 Royal Star and it had a really loud gear whine, nothing like the Rocket's, which is fairly minimal. From what I've read, it's a much more robust way to transfer all that torque than helical cut gears...

Why are we trying to turn a whistle into a whine
The man said whistle, he meant whistle

Sounds more like a whistle than a whine to me...but I guess it "could" be described as a whine...my son, when he heard it for the first time, said it reminded him of the "whinistle" sound a supercharger makes...especially one on a big-block Chevy.

Anyhow, it's coming from under the fuel tank - that's why I suspect the intake system. I'm gonna dig into it tonight to see what I can see. Will post more later.

The way you describe it, it sounds like chain noise from the overhead cams. That can sound like a supercharger spinning up.
