Ignition Problems

Hi Guys, hoping someone can help me out here, know there are a few posts already ref. ignition problems, but none seem to be helping me out.

I have just had the bike off the road for 3 month while waiting to get the upgrade kit fitted after the gearbox went. When the bike went in it was ok with reguards to the ignition, but part of the upgrade is to fit a new main connector block. Oh i forgot to mention that i had had problems with the ignition and the dealer had looped the main feed cable. The guys that did the upgrade, fitted the new block and got rid of the looped cable, saying it should not have been done.

When i eventually got the call to pick the bike up, they said it was having a few problems starting and they thought it was the ignition problem.. They ordred a new key set, but this can not be fitted until 22 June, which would have meant another month off the road. They said i could take the bike as they had had a fiddle and it seems to be ok. I fetch the bike home and it ran great, was soooo good to ride again after not having it for so long. The folloing day i took it out for a blast and it started to miss and felt like it was running on 2 cylinders. The highbeam light came on and the gauges swiped and stuck at funny numbers. I fiddled with the key a bit and had a tug at the wires under the switch no change and then the bike packed up all together. I can tell you i was well pissed and wanted to kill. I had a word with the dealer and he said it will be the ignition switch. After I made the call I tried the bike again and it started and ran sweet as you like. On my way home this happened several more times, stopped, leave it a while then try it and it would start and run fine for a while.

Well cos ive not been able to ride it for so long i thought that id have a look at it.. I've followed the advice on here and wired up a toggle switch to cut the ignition switch out all together. Bike started and ran sweet for about 70 miles, thought great at least i can use it now, then wham, started missing again highbeam light on dials sweep then dead. Leave it a while and it would start again!!! So wen i got home i thought it can't be the ignition switch then.. So ive tried looping the white and blue wire, cutting it out the new block and rejoining it. Fook me the bike is still doing the same thing, so now i have a fooked connector as well as whatever is causing this. Any ideas anyone???

If your problem is ignition related and even if it is bypassed you will still get problems unless you fit relays to the headlights. Without them there is just to much power going through that circuit and it will manifest it's self somewhere else like the plug block.

Hi ST, and thanks for the prompt reply. Your's is the thread that i have been reading a lot of, so many thanks for posting that... I have looped the White/Blue cable so the main power no longer goes through the connector block. Just been out to ensure i have done the correct one and its the white one with the blue line that i have looped.

Just been messing again, and if you turn the ignition, the lights come on, boots etc. Then turn it of and on again a few times with the key, and after a few times the bike goes dead. Leave it for 5 minutes and you can repeate the process no problems... What that all about then.

Ive done all i can think of batt connected good and tight, ive wiggled about all the connectors when the lights are on and they stay on.. Only go off after turning the key a few times, but it cant be the ignition switch, cos its the same when you take that out the loop altogether, got me baffeled i can tell yer... I should have just left it alone... But i really want ter ride it...boo hoo..

Hi Gothlander, thanks for the reply... i will fit relays in the headlights as what you say make perfect sense, but can get my head around why it dies and u leave it for a while and then its ok again, any ideas??

It could be in the plug, I have heard that with the upgraded ignition switch the fault moves to the next weak spot. Also I have heard that computers that get wet can have that symptom. Another thing when wires get hot they can move and break contact and then cool to make contact.

I also have this problem. My bike never missed while running but would not do anything when you tuned the key. I got a new ignition switch (complete rekey), and bypassed the ignition connection to the main harness on the blue and white wire from the harness. My dealer knows about this and will replace the harness if it goes south on me again. I have installed the relays on the headlights and recommend that to everyone. My lights are bright as hell now. My bike is an 09 with 5k miles on it. Goth, everything you have posted seems to be a possibility. My connection between the ignition and wiring harness seems to be the weak link.

Is it ok now ?

Seems to be fine now Goth. After installing the new ignition switch and installing the headlight relays the bike actually turns on faster. Before when I turned the key on there was about a half second pause before anything happened.

My VF1100S (V65 Sabre) wasn't dull, according to Honda, "Pumping out a walloping 121 horsepower, the mighty Sabre could launch from a standstill to 50 miles per hour in just 2.31 seconds!"

Nor was my CBR1100XX, which beat the Ninja ZX-11 and held the "fastest production bike" title for two years until the Busa came out. It was also probably the first bike to ever succesfully use linked brakes.

The XR 600R was King of the Baja in the mid-80s and the XR 650R now holds that title.

The NR and its oval pistons was nowhere near dull either.

I agree they do have a vast selection of dull bikes but they have had some very unique ones to go along with them.
