IGNITION - POWER CONSUMPTION

Just looking at logged data via TORQUE - Todays run - Logs between 13.3 and 15.4V logged at the OBD2 adapter. 3200 data points.
Trying to correlate to RPMS - I see no pattern. Nor speed/rpm/V (x,y,z plot) - Need to calculate the approx LOAD.

This is really interesting stuff. Really! - Ok I'm a sad old scientist.

I also use a Sparkbright - my preference is the smallest, 5mm version but of course that precludes using any existing hole :D

Hi Barbagris

Think I'm going to order one of these units, they are not expensive for what they do.

In regard to the power consumption and alternator out put this is something I've also been interested in. Ive always wanted to put H4 100w in the headlights but been very reluctant as I wasn't convinced the alternator would handle it. Your info on the ignition coils is good, in my old vintage/classic bikes the coils get very hot if you leave the ignition on with motor off and they cool if running again, they don't take long to heat up so there is probably some serious power use. I also had a 4wd that I added an extra 200W of lighting too for off-roading at night. The alternator was not large enough and everything gradually got dim and one of the first things to fail was the ignition system the motor would start missing (was petrol engine not diesel). Turn the spots off and everything would come right after a bit had to get a higher output alternator.

What type of LED headlights are you running BTW?

You will melt the plastic in the headlights with that. Go to LED and you will get a better result with less heat and less draw. I got one of these for my Enfield, but it was too long at the back and wouldn't fit, so I put it in the RIII. I had pretty bright H4 bulbs, but this thing puts them to shame. I am getting another one for the other light.

Hi IDK

Thanks for that will not fit 100w then. I hadn't considered the "plugin" LED's was thinking of the HD type units but they're thieving expensive.

Not trying to advertise this site but price wise I get a lot of gear from Ali Express in China, good fast service and most of the stuff advertised elsewhere is made there anyway, see links below

$18USD with fee shipping

Had seen these but was always dubious if any good by the sounds of things they are?

I have no idea about those ones. You can find LED replacements for H4 bulbs for as little as $5.00 if you search for them, and apparently you do get what you pay for. I was put on to these by somebody else's post (sorry, I can't remember who) and am happy with them, but they are one of the pricier H4 type LEDs.
