Hi all! I ride a '06 Rocket 3 Classic. Since last fall I am having problems with the idle on the bike. It's a strange thing and the 2 dealerships don't know what they are doing. So, I am appealing to the greater community for help! When I do a cold start, the engine revs up to ~1800RPM and quickly drops to about 800RPM. So far so good. When I go for my ride all's well for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then when I pull in the clutch to come to a stop for instance the RPMs drop to below 400 and the engine stalls. Restarting the mill doesn't work as the RPMs go right back to 400 and it stalls again. However, when I use the kill switch that disconnects electrical power to the bike and then close the switch again (the "OFF" length doesn't matter) the computer goes through the start test and after when I restart the engine the RPM go up to 2000 and then slowly drop to about 800 to 900 RPM. From this point on the bike runs very nice, sometimes for 2 hours without trouble. But . . . not always: at 3 different occasions I am riding on the freeway (in Minnesota) when the bike starts to Pop at speed something awful. And not while decelerating and pushing the mill. At that point I need a safe lane where I can coast while I do the switch thing and restart. After that it runs again very well.

I know that all the symptoms point to running lean, but why would a fuel injected engine go suddenly lean like this? I thought of a bad sensor or bad injectors but the dealership tells me otherwise.

Any ideas? Please let me know.

BTW - I am not inexperienced and been riding since 1959: Puch 125, Puch 250, BSA Gold Star, Triumph Bonneville, Matchless 350, Honda CB450, Honda CB750, and for the last 7 years the Rocket 3. I am 70 years old and am still doing 2000 mile return trips (only once per year now )) and total about 7000 miles (11000km) per year.

replace the Throttle position sensor and clean the stepper motor then do a full Idle Stepper Control Voltage Reset to get the ecu and throttle back in sync. Also lubricate the springs in the linkage between the Throttle bodies. and chack to make sure your vacuum lines and vacuum plugs/caps on the extra ports on the throttle bodies are not cracked and dry rotted. After that enjoy the riding again. Make sure you order the new TPS sensor part # T 1245113
**** Ian your fast

CLASSIC TPS symptoms... get a new one & reset. Tuneboy/tune ECU are invaluable for this ( they have a tps reset function) also if you want the dealer to do it they can with the Triumph tool. Just tell them "change the TPS" & don't take no for an answer!

I'll do just as you say! A new TPS it is. Of course the old lady will have a comment or two. I can already hear her: "Barbie needs more accessories! Nah, nah, nah" Grrrr. . . what can you do when you love em? Again, thanks for unanimous advise. When all of you say the same then one of you must be right!
