Except that illegal guns cost, what, 3000%? more than legal guns, and they're vastly harder to find in general. Because, you know, they're illegal. And selling them gets you serious jail time. Which means that mentally ill people with zero connections to the underworld would have a massively hard time to get their hands on a weapon if they couldn't just mail-order one in.

That's the same reason drugs are so incredibly expensive - because they're illegal. Most drugs are preposterously simple and cheap to manufacture.

Since when are illegal guns so expensive? I've traveled all over the world for work, and even in societies where there is a complete ban I can lay hands on a firearm. Fully automatic Russian AK's in Angola, Nigeria, etc for less than $100. Illegal handguns in almost any city in the US for $50. Chicom AK's in Beijing for $150...and the list goes on. Criminals don't charge exorbitant prices for firearms, as they are usually stolen so they have no cost of goods...every dollar they make is pure profit. Contrary to popular belief it does not take connections to the underworld to get illegal anything, just be in the right place at the right time and have cash in your hand...you can buy anything your heart desires drugs, guns, children, prostitutes, slaves or lawn care...your choice. You may not like it, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

Regularly have shady figures offering me all manners of problems I have no desire to get bound up in (drugs, guns, you name it) on the main streets in Oslo! Not even slightly descreetly (had them shouting up the street at me "Hey! You want cocain?"). Problem is nothing gets done about it, and if you do anything yourself your suddenly in a world of fecal matter. (The police, of course, don't have the capacity to deal with these kinds of things. They are, after all, not driving a vehicle slightly too fast)

Yeah, the police over there are really worked up about speeding, and the laws are insanely strict. Which is a problem since you have some of the greatest riding roads in the world. On my visit there the other year I wasn't aware of how serious the fines were, so I cheerfully did 100-110 on 80-roads. Fortunately, didn't get caught.

As for drugs, well, they should all be legal. We could get a far better result by putting a fraction of the money spent on useless and failing enforcement into propaganda and education to make people not start taking them in the first place. Portugal proved that, they halved their drug problem by decriminalizing. Everywhere else, drug issues are just getting worse and worse.

But Norway is quite different to places with a lot of gun violence in other ways. I just read that there were literally two shots fired all year by the police last year, neither of them at a human. That's less shots fired by the police than people killed by the police in the US by a large margin. So it seems like Norway is doing a lot of things right.

You do know our entire population is less than the island of Manhattan right? and the police here weren't armed until recently. (shows how things are improving here... wait...)

Sure, that's a factor, as is the fact that Norway is culturally considerably more homogenous than the US, for example. But I still think Norway is doing a lot right. Recidivism rate is a low 20%, traffic fatalities are very low no doubt partially due to lower speeds and super-strict enforcement, etc.

I apologise for starting the Gun ownership debate(again) on the what do you take thread, it is a subject I feel passionate about,not so much the ownership but the trampling of peoples rights and the criminality of a previously legal circumstance by a Government without a referendum on the change of law, it may have been supported by the population and passed by a referendum then it would have been the will of the people not a knee jerk reaction by Government to be seen as doing something.

You can find them, clean and unregistered - for about USD600 (Walther PPK) including 50 rounds. Usually delivered by courier.
Sold perfectly legally in country of origin - shipped by licensed courier with EndUser certificate. The problem simply arrives when you take receipt - it's your problem then.

If there are no Guns - then there are Machetes, Khukris, Karambits etc................
