Out today and was unimpressed with the heat output. Got home and found the 10 amp fuse that was in my battery tender harness I was using was blown. Hopefully the gear will be a little warmer tomorrow. ha ha. Also ordered new socks and pants. I think they both are about 20 years old.

When I got my '05 GS the first winter with it I found out about heated gear. I made it a point to try to ride all winter. Like a challenge. Road conditions permitting of course. Funny when you pass another bike in January and its 25 degrees it seems to call for more than just a wave. I'd throw a thumbs up. Must be how it was back when bikes weren't common, and the wave thing first started. ... like minded enthusiasts.

My overall coldest experience was a 3-hour ride at 9 degrees F (-13 C), and all I really needed was heated gloves. Everything else I just layered appropriately. Not to say other heated gear wouldn't have been more comfortable.

Heated gear rocks.

The layers don’t really work for me anymore being old, 67 and blood thinners. I would look like the Michelin man! I usually can’t put my remote even to 50%. Very warm.
Edited to add: I don’t mess around with those kind of temperatures. Went out one morning at 38° and thought all was well. Six broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a fractured vertebrae. 🤕 If it froze at some point that morning/night I’m on something with four wheels. 🤪 and that’s coming from somebody that was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado back in the 80s and rode a Kawasaki LTD 550 year around. I would definitely take a ride in a nice warm car when I could, though. 😇 That bike was surprisingly nimble in snow/slush. We all need to be more like Norm fishtailing his Rocket all the way up the gravel road at Spider Creek. Chuckling the entire way.

I'm good with a side car in the snow, but count me out on two wheels. Oh, and to add to my original concern, I got the volt meter in the aux socket, and it's 14.3 going to 14.2 with jacket, pants, gloves and grips. So I feel better about the charging system keeping the battery good with all the heated gear. And it's 13.3 in the morning after sitting all night off the maintainer

Good explanation, thanks. When I have the heated gear on, I always try to ride at a higher rpm than usual. Probably wouldn't want to sit idling for half hour with 200 watts worth of heated gear. I'm also wondering if the temp controller uses a resistor or some sort of sine wave manipulation, or something else. Probably not resister since it doesn't get hot. Point is does it decrease the draw when its turned lower? This is what I have. Gerbing 12V Wireless Temp Controller Remote

I have the same and Gerbing are the only ones who make a jacket liner in tall and their quality is great. The 12V Digital Dual Portable Temperature Controller just went out on me so I replaced it which you can't do with all-in-one products. When the temps dip down into the mid thirties I leave the bike at home due to potential icy spots in the twisties to work. I use a pair of thin hiking rain pants under my leather over pants which is enough. Below 40 I use my heated grips as well.
