GIPRO plug in gear position indicator problem

I never had a problem with my installation on my R3T. It sounds like it may not be wired correctly to the gear position sensor or you have the wrong model.

As for setting the gears so it reads correctly, that was a piece of cake as well. This is from my instructions. You should NOT be running the engine or riding the bike when setting it so it reads correctly.

If the display does not indicate the gears selected correctly, start the Auto-Learning procedure:

  1. If you have a stand, raise the rear wheel off the ground. Otherwise, sit on the bike.

  2. Activate the display (refer to section 5.1). Make sure that the engine stop switch is in RUN position. Do not start the engine.

  3. Select Neutral.

  4. Press the button and keep it depressed until “L” (Learning) appears on the display.

  5. Release the button. If the gear box is in Neutral, “L” starts blinking and Auto-Learning procedure starts.

  6. After a few seconds, the next gear to be learned is blinking on the display (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6). Select the gear indicated on the display. In order to change gear with engine off, move the rear wheel back and forth while pushing the gear selector. If needed, start the engine (bike must be on stand), and keep the clutch lever pulled in – do NOT forget that the bike is in gear!

    “L” is blinking while the selected gear is being learned.
    Repeat this step until all gears have been learned.
    If you’d like to start over the process, press the button once, then go to step 3.

  7. If all six gears have been learned, “U” (Update) is blinking on the display for a few seconds. If your bike has less than 6 gears, press and release the button. The unit saves the new gear positions to Flash memory, then the display goes back to normal operation.
 
thanks for all the suggestions i have found the problem the previous owner has fitted ASV sports levers and the clutch lever is not actuating the clutch switch thus the ECU is not receiving a message that the clutch has been activated ,fitted the original lever and all works fine looking at how to modify the ASV lever so that it will actuate clutch switch
 

Jeezus you're a bloody know it all aren't you.

The OP clearly has a different unit to the one you bought all those years ago so I guess the manufacturer has changed the unit and the instructions - or more likely provided a different set relevant to the particular unit. If you could take your head out of your arse you'd also notice that others have already provided the exact recommendation you are now being so cocky about i.e. to check he has the correct unit. The one that I currently have on the Scrambler plugs into the diagnostic plug and the bike needs to be ridden (or on a centre stand witht he engine running) and taken through the gears to learn. It can't be done any other way. I think the unit the OP has is one like that and may well be the wrong one for a Rocket.

Now that all makers sense. From your first description it seemed like you had the wrong unit installed but I wasn't prepared to rule out that it could be made to work. Glad you got it sorted.

It clearly says the following:

Setup

You need to setup this module after installation. When ignition is turned on, the display counts backwards (6 to 1) indicating that the memory is clear.

  • - Raise the rear wheel off the ground by using a stand, and start the engine in Neutral. (If you do not have a stand, you may setup the unit while riding. Find a long, straight road with light traffic.)

  • - Thedisplaywillblink“1”.
    Select first gear, release the clutch, and keep the RPM above idle speed. The display is blinking faster while the unit is learning the gear.

  • - Whenthedisplayshows“2”,selectsecondgear. Repeat this process until all gears are thought (5 or 6).

    In top gear, wait until “o” (over) is indicated and the display stops blinking.

    The unit is programmed and should indicate the gears correctly.
    Now, when ignition is turned on, the display counts forward (1 to 6) indicating that it is fully functional.
I was one of the few who sought your return to the site on the occasions in the past when your were banned. I did that because, even though your input was frequently questionable, I felt the site deserved a richness of views. I regret that now. This site would be an infinitely better place without you.
