Gauges dead while riding, now won't start

While riding along the other day the gauges went off (needles froze in position and LCD went off) but it didn't affect the ride at all, 10 mins later they sprung back to life. Fast forward to today and the same thing happened except this time I had to stop before they came back on, now the bike won't start. Ignition on turns the headlights on but not the gauges and no sweep, won't even attempt to start.

I had a wiggle of the connector under the tank and a general try of all the connectors I could see but nothing worked, any ideas?!

@ozrider and I repaired a friends bike (2014 R3R) that had water get into the speedo gauge. the water fried the CANBUS chip ($3).
I had to get my Bro in law to attach it (Electronic Engineer) as it was fairly corroded.

I think @Mittzy might have it here - I would say certainly something to do with the CANBUS at the clocks - once started if the CANBUS goes out, clocks will go off but bike will still run; however the CANBUS MUST be in play in order to start
And since our OP @Mouth is in UK, would not be surprised if water source of issue

Also guys - be VERY careful when washing - don't use a hose, even with a gentle stream, anywhere near the electrical equipment, especially clocks and bar switches

Hi @Mouth here is a couple more pics, if you want to delve into the internals.
If you are gentle you can ease the chrome ring off the crimped back edge and the glass and chrome ring will lift off,
Prize off the speedo needle, the black printed speedo number panel is glued on and just lifted off with a small screwdriver under the edge (maybe warm it a little with a heat gun or hair dryer),
Finally undo the torx screws and you are in

I think (after I blew up my FuelBot and subsequent analysis with David) - Part of the problem is :

When do we wash the bike? - Nice day, right!. In the sun - nice and warm then on goes the water.

This reduces the internal pressure - creates a vacuum and pulls the water in. But it never gets out again, because the seal works fine with pressure - just not vacuum. What killed the fuel bot was similar - I'd ridden all day in the sun - was parked at the ferry terminal and an almighty thunderstorm crashed down for 3 hours. I drilled a small hole to get water out - But it was already toast.

Surprised that VDO has allowed that though.
