just my opinion
i seem to disagree with the most of u because
my opinion that the higher grade of fuel has a better or more consistent rate of burn.
now to me it seems that IF ? it is more consistent firing then the engine should be cleaner in the long term.
and i would hope that the more expensive fuel would be cleaner going into to the tank.
now i agree the lower octane has more power but i think that if you put more timing advance in the higher octane would create more power and then be better.
 
ps
i think that the low compression eng and less timing advance was mostly for to get the emissions down.
what do u think?
 
There's nothing premium about it, it's slow burn gas. Additive package is the same. Ever wonder why you don't see advertisements trying to sell the "power" of premium?? Gas companies got in trouble for it. You want to freely had your money over to millionaires be my guest, I won't. Lowest octain without ping is the best.
 
Premium fuel isn’t “better”. It only reduces detonation. A stock engine rocket doesn’t need it, won’t benefit from it. I only switched after upping the compression.

I average 40+mpg at freeway speeds with my modified rocket.
 
The Rocket 3 is NOT ignition knock limited.

Even my modified engine is NOT ignition knock limited running 92 octane (US).

You can advance the timing to best torque with 87 (US) without knocking/pinging.

Literally burning money away over 87.

Traveling cross country there are definitely gas stations out there that have a high content of ethanol in the gas enough to stop your bike in it's tracks. Especially in the corn belt. Ask me how I know...

question
do u think that i can advance the timing in this arizona heat (probably sucking air about 215 f) and still open throttle at about 2000 rpm ?
w/o pinging.
 
I'm not convinced any R3 pings, when maintained, in any weather.

There is a vibration at 2k rpms, present on stock bikes and I have the same feeling on Mufasa, and always have in every build and on every tune.

It's most certainly not pinging as I've run 105 octane and it's still present, that includes huge spans of ignition timing, from like -10 from stock to +8 or so.

What it is, is beyond me to say definitively, I suspect it's a 2nd order vibration being less than fully damped by the balance shaft, but I have no way to verify that.

Honestly, I don't think the engine feels happy below 2200 RPM, on any R3 I've ridden. Sure it runs, and pulls from idle right up, but right at 2200 they all seem to smooth out quite a bit, stinks of engineered in "character" to me and the easiest way to do that is the balance shaft.
 
Mine is definitely unhappy below 2200 rpm. The benefit of higher octane is that you can advance the timing, but if your timing isn't advanced it will do you no good. I had a built 454 in a truck that I put a time advance controller in for that reason.
