Hah, I had the same thing happen. Brand new $600 Arai, first ride. Luckily it didn't leave a scratch. I saw it coming and kept thinking, its going to pull up, it didn't. I ducked and it clipped the top of my helmet. Those suckers carry some weight.
this why I wear a full face helmet ..up to about 6/7 years ago i use a half helmet ..then with in a 2 week span i took road debris and one cig to the face ..oh once i got hold of the young lady that threw the cig out window ..and made her cry...but did calm her back down and told her in the future be very careful ..
The giant wedge-tailed eagles are a real problem crossing the Barkley tabelands into the Northern Territory. I've ridden with other bikes across there a couple of times. Inexperienced riders treat them like crows , expecting them to just up and take flight. They are more like a flying fortress taking off , needing a very long runway. The Barkley is nearly 400klms of dead straight flat road with nothing other than mitchell grass as far as the eye can see. Eagles were a real danger when the territory had open speed limits. Bearing down a few of them eating roadkill at 180+klm was interesting. I've come real close to being taken out by the big ****ers till i learnt they had the right of way
Last summer, traveling on a highway, came up behind a pick-up truck. Just as i pulled in to the left lane to pass, two 4x8 sheets of plywood flew out the back of the pick-up right passed me. If I had waited another second or two to pass, I shudder to think of the outcome.
My father in law ran straight over a wooden crate on the interstate. He was behind a truck and did not see it until it came out from under the truck. It splintered away and he kept going.
There is a positive side to the flying mattress if the mattress hit you but didnt kill you at least you could lay on the mattress until a ambulance arrived

Several months ago, riding down the freeway I spotted a small car with a mattress on the roof. It was held down with a single rope through the windows. The front half of the mattress was standing straight up.
I quickly accelerated and passed him. I glanced in the mirror just in time to see the mattress go airborne. Got lucky that time.
Don't know about you, but around Atlanta when getting close to the end of the month there is the apartment exodus...People bailing out of the apartment before they have to pay another months rent.
Old pick up trucks with all the belongings in the back, a lot like the old Clampets show on TV.
Anyway the freeking truck bed is full of stuff (no kitchen sink!) and it is nothing to see a nasty old pee stained matress on the verge of flight, but there is lots of crap that could easily fall of the back and under your wheels, or smack you in the face... Gas it 'till you pass em I say.
There was one time that a small truck was laden with box spring and matress. To top it off there was this guy laying on top of the matress, with purpose of keeping it from getting lift and flying off. Imagine if this nut fell off and landed in your path!!
And this was traveling through Atlanta, Interstate 85, on a Sunday.
We need to keep our eyes wide open.
