Just because Triumph won't sell you the part, doesn't mean there isn't someone who can. You just have to know where to look. Probably you have to figure out who manufactured the faulty part and its model number and find a source of that part through an electronics vendor. Where there is a will there is a way.

That is a good idea, sourcing it through the actual maker using the part number.

had this error code before, yes it is an issue the throttles (secondary throttle stepper motor), and yes that part triumph will only sell with a whole new set of throttle bodies at a cost of a few grand.

however it could well be just a slight misalignment in the linkage (fair play @TURBO200R4), caused by embarrassing a hayabusa and zx10r, that can be easily fixed. i think your techs might be chequebook engineers!

Rocket III P0638 throttle error

you're welcome
YEP I agree

No matter wether it could be fixed easily if the linkage is just misaligned, it could also be the stepper motor that they don't sell or something else, the bottom line is that Triumph only sells the whole set of throttle bodies at a cost of a few grand. Another problem is that there aren't very many mechanics capable of fixing the thing correctly working at Triumph dealers. There are virtually thousands of Harley mechanics and thousands of dealers, we are stuck with very few. Just the way it is and the price one pays for not following the crowd. In the end it will be sorted out one way or another.

Hello Dave, My problem is different but they still said I needed a new TB Assembly. The part alone is $2,300 then add on labor. I cannot afford that so I bought a used TB assembly from @Manic_Mechanic and cannibalized the pieces i needed to fix my high idle problem. The shop did it so I still had a big bill in the end just not as big as this bill.
Bow if only I can figure out the dang backfire issue that has arisen...

These bikes can also have problems just like the others. When they are running smooth and problem free we tend to think they are superior to all the other brands but if a problem occurs, especially a major one then we realize our bikes are not perfect. I had a new Hinkley Bonnie shortly after they came out and although I thrashed it constantly I never had any problems at all. I was expecting the same with the Rocket, the problem is that in reality those expectations are unrealistic. Some owners will have zero issues but some will not be so lucky. I even know guys with Harleys that never have troubles, many are not as lucky.

So having secondaries fully opened in ECU wouldnt bypass this issue ?

I AM GUESSING At how the ecu works because most of the dealers think it is top secret.
usually the ecu will check the 2nd throttle position (by the 2nd tps) as soon as u turn the key on then at idle then all the time u are riding. depending on what the problem is having them 100% it would still check them when u turn on the key my guesss it would go to 100% and check it there. so yes it might solve the problem.
when i modified mine i just went to 100% above 3000 rpm. but i think those setting theirs @ 100% would have a lot less trouble because it would sweep once those still set factory would be working all the time.

if i was working on the bike i would clear codes and see if they come back.
i would check the 2nd tps if it is not set right it might think the 2nd actuator is in the wrong spot. there has been a lot about the main tps being set wrong and causing problems. to the ecu the 2nd settings is just as important as the main settings.

I was wondering the same thing, plus lots of people just remove the secondaries anyhow.

i have mine set to 100% at all times, non-stop, relentless. but i still got this error P0638. i have another vid which shows the open/close cycle the secs go through when ignition is switched on, much like the tacho and speedo needles sweep. i believe that is the point at which the error was thrown, in my case.

while on the subject, another thing triumph won't sell on its own is the cam ladder. you bust it and it's a new cylinder head. unless you're mad and you have an entire spare engine..
