Clutch issues

Ok, maybe I am a knucklehead, but I wanted to adjust my clutch according to the manual, and it talks about 1-3mm of free play on the clutch handle. There is no free play on my handle, I can make a gap, but only by squeezing the lever, adjusting the upper screw a few turns either way does the same thing. I thought free play was just that, it moves without any effort. I don't have to squeeze hard on the handle to get a gap, but I do have to squeeze it. Can someone explain this to me? Thanks guys.

The easiest way to check it is to pull the outer cable away from the clutch lever. There should be a little bit of free play, about 2-3mm. If there isn't any free play then you will wear out the clutch actuating parts, and if there is too much then you are not fully releasing the clutch.

detent if he lets clutch out and nothing happens?
