cloth drop on hot muffler

I was wiping the dust off my R3T awhile back and nimble fingers dropped the cloth on his HOT muffler. It obviously baked some stuff onto the muffler. I tried everything to polish it out and nothing worked. Mentioned it to a friend who has a motorcycle shop today and he said to take a pre 1962 copper penny (US) on a hot muffler using gloves and gently use the edge to take it off. So when I got home I took an old wheat back penny and tried it on a section.....amazing!!!!! Took it off and no scratches like you would have if you used some 000 SOS and toothpaste (another suggestion).
I believe he said it would work on road tar too.
See, an old penny will save you a lot of money.

Thanks, I'll give it a try - if I can find any old copper coins (presume pre '66 would work here). Otherwise I have some 2" copper pipe I could try.

Just on other suggestions, oven cleaner worked a treat on my mate's bike. Pipes need to be hot.

U might have to have a US coin mate, but of yoirs will not work I would ne happy to send U one. Although Obama might come after me for sending so much money out of the country, lol.

As you said Richard it is the copper content of the old pennies it must help remove the mess or it could be the wee bit of tin or zinc, another way is to stop dropping cloths on your hot exhaust

Richard, as a hint you might want to make sure any copper you use is anealed first as it will be softer.

I use OOOO steel wool with some metal polish. Easy does it on the pressure! Works like a charm.

"Auto Gylm Paint Renovator" works a treat on my Staintunes gets rid of the yellowing and other blemishes not to mention Tar and it does not scratch either even better than some of the Stainless Steel Cleaners/ Polishers I have tried with no success
